Hi

This photo of a Jassid bug was taken last week in my local park on the northside of Brisbane but it has taken a little time to identify him. These bugs are quite common in Australia but I believe he is the first to be posted on TN. The Queensland Museum have an inquiry centre where you can email your photos for identification so I was really pleased that they could help and also advise on websites and books to assist in identifying bugs and insects in the Brisbane area.

So this guy is officially called an Eurymela Fenestrata. They are known as Common Jassids and Treehoppers. They have an adult body length of 15mm long and are one of the largest size bugs in the Eurymelidae family.

Many species in this family are brightly coloured. Their head is relatively flat with ocelli in the front. They often stay in groups feeding on young stems of eucalypt. Usually there are ants around them for their excretion of 'honey-dew', which is the excess sugar that the treehoppers do not need.

A fine macro of a Jassid Treehopper, the sharpness and lighting being great and the POV shows it up pretty well against a neautral BG.

Really nice macro of this Australian bug, certainly one I have never seen before, excellent detail. wonderful colours, I really like the shadows on the side of the branch, my only negative comment :( sorry, there is a little bit of digital noise in the b/g created by the 400 iso, but other then that an excellent capture, well done,

Hello Sue, it's nice to know you can get help with ID when you need it. I should start looking around for some of mine. This is a great macro of this Jassid Bug. 15mm, he is small, but you've picked up very good detail on him. The eye and thorax especially stand out. Great colour. Very nicely done.
