[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Close to the roaring noise of the Iguazu Waterfalls stand this Rufescent Tiger-Heron. Unmoved, till it stretched out one foot and wing. Then I saw its beautiful colours.
DESCRIPTION
The RUFESCENT TIGER-HERON(Tigrisoma lineatum) is 66 cm en weigths 850 g. It has a stocky, shaggy neck.
Adults: head, neck, and upper breast chestnut, barred with black; brown median stripe, bordered by white, down throat and foreneck; belly grayish; mantle dusky-olive vermiculated with dull buff. Iris orangish; facial skin yellow with blackish loral stripe; upper mandible blackish, lower horn-color, shading to dusky tomia; legs dull dark olive-green.
Immatures: head rufous; neck and upperparts rich buff to pale rufous, broadly barred or chevroned with black; center of throat, stripe down foreneck, and center of belly white. Takes at least 2 years to acquire adult plumage; subadult plumages like adult but more broadly and heavily barred.
HABITS
Haunts streams, sloughs, or swamps inside forest, rarely venturing into the open, at least by day; usually solitary; stands motionless at water's edge or on snag for long periods awaiting prey or walks very slowly in shallow water; usually rests with neck hunched, bill pointed slightly upward; when alarmed or hunting, often extends neck diagonally.
VOICE.
Alarm note a hoarse quok-quok-quok, louder and deeper than call of night-heron; a harsh, groaning, far-carrying, long-drawn-out kwooohh or kwawwh mostly at night, probably to advertise territory .
NEST.
A flimsy platform of sticks, high in a tree. Egg 1, bluish-white spotted with pale violet.
STATUS. All over Brazil.
RANGE. E Honduras (accidental SE Mexico?) to N Argentina.

Wow - that's one beautiful heron! A first for me - to see this species. Seems to be a larger heron - somewhat between the Great White Egret and Great Blue Heron in size, huh?

Hi Peter. This is a bird i have never seen so thanks for posting. A strange looking one at that. you have captured it with good detail in the feathers with bright colours. a nice pose with it looking at somthing. well done TFs good notes too.

Hi Peter,

I don't know how I missed this one! Had I seen it before I would have remembered it. Beautiful shot with wonderful colors and fine details. The markings on the plummage and wings are so unusual. Love the position with the leg raised.
