[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
These photo was taken early in the morning at the beginning of my Antarctic adventure in the southern most city (The end of the world) Ushuaia. The day before the mountains ware black. Here you can see it covered with frost in the early morning sun.

Ushuaia is the capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego, and claims to be the world's southernmost city. There are two other contenders for the title of southernmost city; Puerto Williams on the Chilean island of Navarino (farther south but it has only 2400 inhabitants); and Punta Arenas, also in Chile (much larger but farther north).

Ushuaia is located on the southern coast of the island of Tierra del Fuego ("Land of Fire") in a wide bay, guarded on the north by the Martial mountain range and on the south by the Beagle Channel.


Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago, 28,476 sq mi (73,753 kmē), separated from the southernmost tip of the South American mainland by the Strait of Magellan. The southern point of the archipelago forms Cape Horn.
Only 30% of the islands have forests which are classified as Magellanic subpolar; the northeast is made up by steppe and cool semidesert.

There are six species of trees found in Tierra del Fuego: Canelo or Winter's Bark (Drimys winteri), Maytenus magellanica, the southernmost conifer in the world (Pilgerodendron uviferum), and three kinds of Southern Beech; Nothofagus antarctica, Nothofagus pumilio and the evergreen Nothofagus betuloides.

These forests are unique in the world for having developed in a climate with such cold summers (around 9°C).

Wow, Krzysztof, this is a weird landscape!
The lighting, the grey misty sky, the sharp contrast between the green mountain slopes and the snow without rocky parts makes this quite unusual. I never realised that Tierra del Fuego could look like this.

A truly unique sight and landscape! I really enjoy your entire saga about your trip to the south. Just as Annick suggested, a travelogue would indeed be a great idea :)

The moment captures here is magical - with the first sunrays of the day hitting the cold forest and mountains. The atmosphere in this picture is impressive and is surely translated to the viewer - we feel a bit colder just by looking at it. That is realized by the excellent reproduction of the conditions through a spot-on exposure.
The note is also great and gives interesting information about the place.
Hope ou don't mind me trying something out: i did a workshop where i cropped some of the sky, in order to give the picture a wider, more panoramic feel.
Anyway, it's nice seeing you again here and looking at your lovely work!

Excellent capture of this fascinating landscape in beautiful light. What an interesting mix of trees in this forest and it seems very dense right up to the edge of the mountain. I expect you captured this from a plane, or? I'd love to be down there to explore the forest!

I like warm light and colours of the image. So nice delicate colour palette and wonderful place which was pictured with taste and skill. Details and sharpness of the entire image are superb too. As always, tone is written very well and so interesting. My best wishes and compliments.

Hi Krzysztof,
An excellent capture of this far southern landscape of Tierra Del Fuego.
This is truly a fascinating part of the world.
It sounds as though the vegetation there is similar to parts of the south of New Zealand.
We have a lot of Nothofagus here in our southern sub-alpine forests.
The light in this shot is great.
I assume that is an airstrip cut into the forest that we can see.
