[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Photo was taken in Tierra del Fuego National Park at the southern most tip of South America. There are 3 species of Nothophagus in these area: Nothofagus antarctica, Nothofagus pumilio, Nothofagus betuloides.

Nothofagus (southern beeches) is an ancient genus of about 40 species of trees and shrubs, which was present in Gondwana and which can be found today in South America, New Zealand, New Guinea, New Caledonia as well as in Australia.

Fossil records of Nothofagus have also been found in Antartica.

In the past they were included in the family Fagaceae, but genetic tests by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group revealed them to be genetically distinct, and they are now included in a family their own, the Nothofagaceae.

The leaves are toothed or entire, evergreen or deciduous. The fruit is a small, flattened or triangular nut, borne in cupules containing 2-7 nuts.

The southern supercontinent Gondwana included most of the landmasses in today's southern hemisphere, including Antarctica, South America, Africa, Madagascar, Australia-New Guinea, and New Zealand, as well as Arabia and the Indian subcontinent, which are in the Northern Hemisphere. The name is derived from the Gondwana region of central northern India (from Sanskrit gondavana "forest of Gond").

Hi Krzysztof,
a great presentation and excellent way to show both details and a wider environment. The story of how Antarctic was once a much warmer place has always fascinated me, and here you show us part of that story very well.
A very good POV of the forest with a nice depth given by the path, and also some lovely colour and a perfect DOF in the half showing the leaves. Well done and thanks for sharing this.
Paul

Hi Krzyztof

Great presentation Southern Beech _ I have seen them in all the places you mention apart from Madagascar, where I did not know thet existed. I did not know the origin of Gondwana either so thanks for that too.

Excellent work

James :)

A very nice way to demonstrate. I love the way you had two VERY important parts included in a simple yet dynamic way. Along with your usual well thought out notations it makes another great lesson.

This is fantastic, Krzysztof!
Great dual image showing Nothofagus (Southern beech) forest together with a fine autumnal leaf close-up. Both are technically excellent and well composed. A very good contribution to TN, especially with your informative note.

Very attractive and interesting presentation of this ancient Beech forest with close-up of the beautiful small leaves. It must be fantastic to walk along that path!! Excellent captures, both very sharp and in fine colours. I love the colours of the leaves and their soft beautiful background. Well done!
