I took these shot on a short trip to Martial Glacier near Ushuaia (Argentina, Tierra del Fuego). It was a cloudy day. W have seen only one specimen. At the beginning it was sitting on the tree. Later he decided to take a walk. Very funny walking bird of pray. Photo hand held, no flash from about 3-4 meter distance

If think that these is the only specimen (taken in nature) that you could seen on TN. Recently Ania (jazdzurka) posted a photo of the same bird. You can find it here.

I wan to dedicate these shot to great birdwatcher and great bird photographer Mario (EOSF1)

Southern Caracara (Caracara plancus), also known as the Southern Crested Caracara

Order: Falconiformes
Family: Falconidae

Polyborus plancus has been split into cheriwa and plancus and both transferred to the genus Caracara

Southern Caracara is restricted to central and southern South America: Argentina; Bolivia; Brazil; Chile; Paraguay; Peru; Uruguay.

It has a total length of 50-65 cm and a wing-span of 120 cm

It is an opportunistic raptor, often seen walking around on the ground looking for food. Mainly feeds on carcasses of dead animals, but will steal food from other raptors, raid bird nests, and take live prey if the possible arrives

Hi Krzysztof

Excellent shot - I have never managed to get agood shot of these despite having seen them many times. You were lucky to get such a good shot - despite the branch. Well done.

They seem like quite recently evolved birds of prey to me - just my impression.

Hand held...all of you folks are so good at hand held...This is an area in which I sort of shake a bit...perhaps from the excitement..I must learn to relax more...but in a situation where you were so close, must mean that you were totally calm and relaxed. Very nicely done and a change of pace from your other images! And Mario..Mr Bird of course:-) We shall not forget him by any means...a nice dedication.

Great that we have both Northern and southern Caracara shown on one day here at TN! I wouldn't know how to tell them apart - maybe the northern species is more orange round the beak.
Good catch in natural environment! Well done! Cheers, Klaus

Hello Krzysztof,
Though a branch is partly in the way this is a fine capture of a Southern Caracara. The sharpness and lighting are good and sufficient to isolate it from the Notofagus tree BG. Nice compositiontoo.
Thanks for sharing this image of an interesting species of S. American raptor.

Hej Krzysiu
Pozdrawiam
Ania

Hi Krzysztof,
You captured a nice shot of this raptor among the branches, focusing is really good despite the busy foreground and background. Good details and composition.

Greetings,

What an interesting bird, this Caracara, Chris!
We have rarely seen this species on TN, so you have contributed a great deal to our knowledge by sharing this image from South America.
The image is most natural and I don't mind the least bit if a part of the bird is hidden behind the branch of a tree.
TFS and regards.

Hello Krzysztof, what a great picture of that pretty rare bird, the sharpness is incredible and the light and exposure are fantastic, too bad for that twig in front of the bird but it's still a wonderful capture! Congrats for that! Thanks,

Mario
