Males and Females – differences

Males have a massive neck and chest, and a characteristic upturned snout. Males (bulls): 2.6m, 300kg, Females (cows): 1,8-2m, 150kg. Sometimes males are even three times the size of females.

Females reach sexual maturity at 4-6 years, males at 5-6 years, although males only first achieve territorial status at 9-10 years. Males arrive at the breeding colonies before females in late November-early December to establish territories that will eventually contain an average of 3-6 females. Less dominant males unable to establish territories are known to attack undefended females and pups, occasionally attempting to mount them, and in some cases killing them in the process.

Population
The total population is estimated at 265,000; 30,000 in Peru, 128,500 in Chile, 90,000 in Argentina, 12,000-15,000 in Uruguay, 3,000 in the Falkland Islands, and a few hundred in Brazil originating from the Uruguayan and Argentinean colonies. The populations in Uruguay and the Falkland Islands are decreasing while those in Argentina and Chile are increasing by 3% annually.

Hi Krzysztof,
Wonderful presentation of the male and female Sea Lion. Fine details and lovely colours and the 'beard'(as Paul says) truely does separate the sexes. Great POVs and composition. Kudos.

Hi Krzysztof.
You have shared a perfect by quality and by subject shot. I like it a lot. Amazing presentation of these attractive animals. Superb colours, fantastic details and sharpness, excellent close distance and POV. Bravo and TFS.

Hello Krzysztof, excellent double photo of both sexes the detail and sharpness is excellent great note and interesting info. Well done tfs rgds Necip.

Hi Krzysztof,

Two for the price of one, and either would stand on its own as a great posting. Both images are well composed in their own right, but the merged image is also well composed, which isn't an easy tack. Great level of detail and the overall colouration is great. Excellent posting.

Kind regards,

Mike

Hello Krzysztof,

This is a very good presentation of both sexes of this species! I like the sharpness and the excellent details in the fur in both pictures. The colors look natural and well saturated. Excellent post as you show the differences between sexes in both pictures and notes. Thank you!

Estupendo comentario con unas imágenes geniales que lo ilustran.

Hello Krzysztof,
It's good to see both male and female Sealions in the same frame so that it is easy for us to compare and find the difference. Both shots are excellent for their sharpness, details and POV. Very informative notes too.
Thanks for the share,
Regards,
Smitha.

These are wonderful sharp images Krzysztof. Each would have made a nice posting on their own. Sharpness and natural color are super. You didn't mention the smell. We have boated up close to similar colonies and it is pretty pungent.

Hi Krzysztof

A great shot showing the difference between males and females - I have seen 5 species and the difference is greater in this species than any of the others I have seen. Excellent detail and exposure.
