Bella (Hypanartia bella, Fabricius, 1793)

Continuation of the presentation makes a pair of days on this species and that can be seen HERE with its closed wings.

In this case, one is the same unit, but visualizing in all his splendor the colorful one of his unfolded wings.

Identification and taxonomy

Typical FW length 26 mm.
Hypanartia bella is most similar to H. lethe but has a more produced forewing apex, more pronouncedly scalloped distal wing margins, a more diagonal orange discal band on the dorsal forewing, largely white instead of orange subapical markings on the dorsal forewing that are reduced in number, and a different, darker ventral pattern.
Peruvian specimens have a somewhat wider orange discal band on the dorsal forewing, and the postdiscal band is largely orange (it is largely white in southeastern Brazilian specimens), except the spot in cell M2-M1, which is white in both populations.
However, the geographical variation in H. bella appears to be rather variable and clinal, and no subspecies are recognized here.

Biology

This species occurs up to 3200 m in southeastern Peru (Ayacucho, Apurímac and Cuzco, being very common at Machu Picchu), along the margins of cloud and montane forests.
Males frequently puddle at damp mud, and the species also nectars on flowers of Asteraceae.
The food plant of H. bella is reported as Celtis (Ulmaceae) and as Trema (Ulmaceae) and Urtica (Urticaceae).
Reared the species on Phenax and Parietaria (Urticaceae) in northwestern Argentina, and gave an almost complete life history (no eggs were found).

Distribution

Southern Peru to northern Argentina, Brazil (eastern and southeastern), Uruguay and Paraguay.

Very nice work Ricardo, lovely composition, detail and colour. Great note too. Well done.

Your DOF at 5.6 is excellent. I like the colors in this and the image is very sharp. I do understand as well that the texture of this butterfly does not allow for your reflection to be on it:)

Thanks for posting

Very well done Ricardo. Strong compo and a nice POV. Details are sharp and the DOF nearly made it. As always your notes are interesting.

Composition excellente. Je me demande sur quelles fleurs le papillon repose. Ça ressemble à un pommier de chez nous. Bon travail Ricardo.

Nice and close. The upper wing has some blur, probably a smaller Av would have prevented that.
