Patagonic hare or Mara (Dolichotis australis)


This rodent of the family cavidae, presents a robust and heavy body, of seventy and five centimeters in length, with a rudimentary or almost null tail, bare in the end (similar to a finger tiny).
He has thin and long legs with fingers and strong nails.
The head is similar to the one of the otter, with cleared ears of ten centimeters and truncated snout.
The coat is of brown-grayish color, mottled yellowish in the back and target in the ventral region; a remarkable white band runs through the rumps in the back zone, being contiguous with the black color of the dorsal end.

They run with extreme speed giving long and high jumps without much zigzagging, which the difference of other hares and rabbits.

They frequent barren zones with low or thin vegetation, throughout the Patagonia, from the center towards the east to being contiguous with the marine coast.
Of nocturnal habits, although it is common to find it during the day.
It shows a trusted attitude, since she is not too easily frightened.

It is fed on grass, preferredly, and one stays in caves and hollows where the female has one or two errors by litter.
It is easy to domesticate, if one leaves in parks or gardens loose.
Pumas, the foxes and the man are their main predators.

If species are grouped that usually are taken by different, the patagonic hare inhabits so much in the province of Santa Cruz and Chubut, like those of Rio Negro , Neuquen and Pampas, always in regions that are not mountainous.

The persecution on the part of the hunters, the introduction of the European hare and the expansion of the human populations is displace it little by little of their natural environment.

I think I've seen those in a Mexican zoo long ago. Nice cuddle :)

What a weird looking animal, one I've not seen before. The head looks vaguely like that of a Capybara. Your note is excellent as usual. I like the pose, and despite the motion its a good composition, especially for a shot taken in full sun. The shaddow suggests it was in the middle of the day. I've enjoyed this one Ricardo.

Interesting animal Ricardo. I can see it's likliness to a standard hare but at the same time it is very very different. Very good post and good note.
