Gulf Fritillary

A new image of a Gulf Fritillary... in this case with its folded wings, with a drawing and colorful totally different from inner side from the same ones.

I have presented previously 2 photos of them...

Gulf Fritillary where a exemplar is appraised on Lantana flowers.

The other, Gulf Fritillary x 2 where two specimens with different conformation in the wings and your version LP so that they can evaluate the details of the same ones.

Gulf Fritillary (Family Heliconiidae)

Description: 64 to 73 mm of expansion eave. Narrow previous wing, the part of above is of reddish color orange with some black spots and a black network throughout the edge of the later wing; also it presents a group of smallest white spots near the costal area of the previous wing. The part of under the previous wing is similar but with the color base pink-chorale and tears of metallic silver-plated color near the end; the part of under the later wing is of color coffee or olive, of mat to the brilliant with many silver-plated veins. The venation presents the discal cell of type opened in the later wing.

Habitat: One is him in the limits of subtropical forests, urban gardens, cannons, open and sunny areas with flowers.

Host Plants: Flower of passion (incarnata the Passiflora) and other species. The pasiflora contain alkaloids that grant toxicity to the adults and it allows them to secretar nauseous fluids of his body, with which they protect themselves of his predators, reason why its pattern of coloration becomes jumbled in mimetic complexes.

Distribution: The south of the United States until Mexico. In Nuevo Leon it has been registered in San Nicholas de los Garza, Villa de Garcia, Guadalupe, San Roque Monterrey, Escobedo, San Pedro.
The photographed subspecies (Agraulis vanillae maculosa) can be found in great Sud America's areas.

Observations: The little eggs are of yellow color. By the general the adults feed themselves on the nectar of white and red flowers.

Gracias Ricardo. Por cierto estupenda nota.

Great shot Ricardo. The wings look like quilting. The definition of the hairs on the under body is fantastic. TFS.

Hi Ricardo.
You managed to capture a very beautiful specimen of the butterflies. Delicateness and exactness of its reproduction are terrific. Rich colours of the butterfly harmonize with smooth and soft coloured BG very well. Composition of the picture is wonderful as usual for your works. My compliments and TFS.
Alexei.
