Dead Nature

I decided to denominate this image thus, not because the protagonist is dead, but that remembered me to an artistic work of that style.

For days crossing the main footpath of the Ecological Reserve Costanera Sur of Buenos Aires, I found adhered in the inferior side leaf this discarded Cicada shed skin (thanks LordPotty by its publication of the same insect, that allowed me to identify it).

The size of this is of approx 30 to 35 mm. and as it is appraised in the photo, many details of the insect can be observed as if he was alive... the hairs of his legs and head, the ocular globes, the hooks of the legs, etc.

Cicadas ("Suh-Kay-Duhs")

Belong to the Phylum Arthropoda and the Class Insecta (or insects) which are those creatures described as having three body parts (head, thorax, & abdomen), two antennae, and six legs.

Cicadas belong to the order Hemiptera and the sub order Homoptera which are classified as those insects with piercing mouth parts designed for sucking plant juices and have three stages of development (egg, nymph, & adult).

Cicadas are the largest insects in their order and are closely related to aphids and scale insects. Cicadas make up a Super family called the Cicadoidea which also includes leaf and tree hoppers, and are in their own family called the Cicadidae.

Worldwide, cicadas are heralded in folklore and myths and are often associated with "rebirth" in other cultures.

Cicadas have a wide diversity where some are the size of fruit flies while others can have a wingspan of over eight inches, such as the species "Pomponia imperator" which is found in Malaysia.

Most known cicada species have multiyear life cycles, where some have developed "periodical" life cycles and are not seen for many years at a time.

Hi Ricardo, it could be that it's very much alive - isn't this the exuvia of the final moult? The emergent adult may be happily chirpping away?

Very good photo with good details and adequate DOF. Well done.

Olá, Ricardo. A criatura acima, embora pequena, tornou-se assustadora.

Como não poderia deixar de ser, mais um excelente trabalho, com muita nitidez. O "monstro", visto em diagonal, fez que com que a composição ficasse ótima.

Very nice and detailed macro shot! I like the colors!

Excellent capture of the skeleton. You did really well to get this from not overexposing. Very well done.

Hi Ricardo
VERY nice exsoskeleton of this bug with the load mouth, Very nice picture and note, well done!

Bravo ! Outstanding creation overall with fresh air . The bugger is disgustingly beautiful and I must say : 1. I wouldve never imagined thats a cicada 2. I wouldve never imagine that is just the armour and the knight has left. 3. What in the world is that little puce on the low central leaf ?

I suppose you are going to try and tell me that the little black bug on the right climbed out of that shell:) This is beautiful and the DOF and sharpness is perfect. Very well done.

Thanks for posting

Una imagen muy interesante, Ricardo.
Jamás visto una escena semejante antes.
Grande, puntiagudo y claro.
Una nota muy instructiva también.
Agradecimientos

A very interesting picture, Ricardo.
Never seen a similar scene before.
A great one, sharp and clear.
A very instructive note too.
Thanks

Hi Ricardo, you're right, this looks very similar to my cicada. Your photo has more detail, and he seems to have more hair then his Australian cousin! Great photo, well done :)

Salut Ricardo, vous êtes correct, ceci regarde très semblable à ma cigale. Votre photo a plus de détail, et il a plus de cheveux puis son cousin australien ! Grande photo, bien faite :)

Ricardo, Interesting subject done very well! The detail is just superb..I even see another tiny insect sharing this blade of grass...Well done on this!!

MUY BUENA TOMA MACRO DE LA CIGARRA SU VIEJO "TRAJE"
CMARZANO

Great shot.
Didn't know it was possible to take a MACRO like this without a SLR.
Well done!!!

Hey Ricardo,

This is a very beautiful picture of an ugly creature, if I may say so. I also find it interesting an original on your behalf to photograph the remainings of a bug. I never thought this could make a good subject and I would have missed this opportunity for sure. Though the insect is dead, the diagonal composition makes the picture very dynamic. I wonder why you chose this diagonal compo over a horizontal one, which would have allowed you to follow the rule of thirds placing the edges of the leaf along the first and second third of the photo. Obviously, the one you chose looks more dynamic. The details on the insect are very sharply rendered, even the places where the hair used to be. Also the texture of the leaf that suports the bug skin is sharp, contrasting the OOF Bg. The exposure is also very good leaving clear details both in shady parts and in the highlights of the reflections. Technically correct! Excellent job!

Good night,
Eddie

Hola Ricardo, acabo de publicar mi version de estos pequeños recuerdos que las cigarras nos dejan. Me gusta el sentido de transparencia que le has dado desde ese angulo. TFS, Gabriel
