Field Ant (Formica spp.)

Ant Black or brown, approx 10mm. of length, which to being the portrayed was suck some existing substance in the trunk of the plant, possibly left by another insect.

Its more remarkable characteristic is the fuzziness existing clear color mainly the body.

Characteristics

Size: Workers of this genus measure about 3/8-inch in length.

Color: The color varies depending on the species. Black field ants are more common, but red, brown, red and black, and golden yellow species may also be encountered around homes and buildings.

Behavior: A group of about a dozen species of ants in the genus Formica are known as field ants. They rarely enter homes, but are commonly seen crawling on porches, foundations and decks where they may be confused with carpenter ants, because they are similar in size and coloration. (The thorax of a carpenter ant, when viewed from the side, is evenly rounded while that of a field ant is clearly uneven in shape.) The ants feed on insects and the sweet honeydew produced by aphids and similar insects.

Habitat: Field ants are common in yards, landscaping, fields and wooded areas. They build medium-sized mounds up to 12 inches in diameter, but more often nest under stones, logs, landscape timbers and porch slabs.

Tips for Control: Since field ants do not invade houses, they usually do not require treatment. If colonies are located where they might be deemed unsightly, individual mounds may be treated with an appropriately labeled pest control product.

Stunning macro Ricardo. Excellent post. One of your best

Ricardo, you've just posted the KING of ants here. Viewing the ant theme, it's clear none has this stunning quality, specially remarquable for 10mm insect macro. You did well in shooting from above to reduce the effect of the insect lenght on the focus, so your DOF is very good. I also like the downwards position. Congratulations.

hey ricardo, nice shot!good sharpness and good details, composition is good too.well done!

Ricardo, sempre que você fica um dia ou dois sem postar uma de suas fotos no TN penso que você deve estar preparando alguma foto ótima para nós.

Com a foto acima não foi diferente: excelente macro numa excelente composição com grande nitidez.

Great composition on this one Ricardo. Thats quite a nasty looking ant. Its sharp yes but your last post on the Frog gives a new meaning to "sharp". Great post.

Hello Ricardo
This is very nice, but this is not one of your best ;)
Great POV and composition, nice colours and DOF.

This is sharp, but not enough IMHO.
Very good post Ricardo, well done.

Another brilliant shot Ricardo, the composition, POV, DoF and detail are all superb. You are developing into a very good photographer of insects. Have a Merry Christmas, Chris.

Great macro Ricardo.
Very good details , nice colours and very good compostion.
Very well done.

Wow, that ant looks huge. Very impressive "hairy" closeup, and a nice compositional diagonal made by the blade on which it is sitting. Excellent notes, too, fine job on this posting. Happy New Year to you.

Excellent shot Ricardo. So clear and sharp for such a small creature. Very, very well done.

Firstly, please allow me to wish you all the best for 2005, Ricardo. I have been away for a while and missed some of your shots, I have a weeks vacation left and might drop off the radar again.

This macro shot of the ant is exceptional. Both in quality and interesting subject. The abdomen covered only half in hair fascinating. Such a great shot, well done.

It is the same ant will be?

Hello Ricardo,
I've never seen such a close-up of an Ant before. I watched a TV show about Ants recently, the social ranks and rules they have are quite amazing! It's a nice shot too, good detail, good exposure and light, excellent DOF and great colours. Interesting note too, a good post.

Adrian

Hello Ricardo, very well done on getting so close to this ant. I think a little more fill flash to bring out more of the ant and less of the bg and maybe the head and eye could be slightly sharper. They are small nits as I realise these are not easy to do and in my experience ants do not sit around for long! Well done
