Little Hoverfly in Flight (another species)

Image capture in the State of the Agronomy School of Buenos Aires City.
Non identified specimen of 12mm. aprox.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Diptera
Superfamily: Syrphoidea
Family: Syrphidae

Flies in the Diptera family Syrphidae are commonly known as flower flies, hoverflies, or Syrphid flies.

As their common names suggest, they are often seen hovering or nectaring at flowers; the adults feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods.
In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams.
In other species, the larvae are insectivores and prey on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects.
Aphids alone cause tens of millions of dollars of damage to crops worldwide every year, and so aphid-feeding hover-flies are being recognised as important natural enemies of pests, and potential agents for use in biological control.
Adult syrphid flies are important pollinators.

Many Syrphids mimic bees or wasps in appearance. It is thought that this mimicry protects hover flies from falling prey to birds and other insectivores which avoid eating true wasps because of their sting.
However a flower fly and a wasp can be distinguished by counting the wings.
The flies have two wings, and the wasps and bees have four.
Hover flies get their name from their characteristic flight pattern of hovering nearly still, then darting a short distance very rapidly only to start hovering again, a pattern not seen in the wasps and bees they mimic.

About 6,000 species in 200 genera have been described.

Hola Ricardo.

Hi Ricardo,
This is a really great shot. Nice soft quality light and a spot on exposure. Beautiful colors and sharp detail in this. The in flight Hover Fly looks superb. Very cool shot!!! ;-}

Hi Ricardo,
Your macro are always so impressive! It is incredible how you manage to catch this flying Hoverfly with this great sharpness! I am surprised that the 1/320 shutter speed worked that good ;) Colors and composition are really beautiful! TFS,
Claudine

Excellent macro shot again. Perfect DOF. Very good exposure and contrast. Shame that you had to use such a slow shutter speed, I would have liked to see the wings frozen. I wonder where the rest of it's legs are?!

Hello Ricardo,
Wow, this is excellent. I have so much respect for all of you people who can capture flying insects with macro equipment, that's real camera work. It's a lovely shot, great detail and DOF, perfect exposure and wonderful vibrant colours. The composition combined with the shallow DOF is great, just two foreground objects perfectly placed against the rich green background. Excellent work.
Regards,
Adrian

Hi Ricardo!

This is simply masterpiece! We all know how hard is to take good photo of hoverfly inflight, especially with no dSLR camera. And you did it perfectly my friend! Not only fly is detailed and sharp, but also composition is very good. Bright yellow flower looks very good, but insect is of course the best. Superb work!

Hi Ricardo, very difficult shot of this littel insect flying!! Very hard to do , but you've handled it perfectly. Stunning colors and details, the light on it is very good. Best regards, Didier.

Hi Ricardo,
this is a beautiful in-flight shot.
The details are very good. the stripes on the fly are well seen, I the shallow DOF brings out the subject well from the BG.
Great work, my friend.

Hello Ricardo,
What better way to capture a hoverfly than inflight hovering? :)
Excellent POV, DOF, detail, color, light, and well composed..
Very well done.

Oi Ricardo
