Amazon River Turtle
(Podocnemis unifilis)

I found this big guy on the Heath River in Bolivia, just sharing the Sun's rays with his buddies. I noticed the more we traveled up river they became more frequent. Turtles love to bask in the sun, this gives butterflies the opportunity to land on them and use their long probosis to extract the minerals that are excreted from the turtles tear ducts, kinda like a super Gatorade pitstop for them.

Hi Paul,
Another great shot in your Buddies series :-) Superb capture with all three in the frame, beautiful detail and colours, perfect exposure. Great DOF too, really makes the three amigos stand out.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Paul,
That is an excellent shot! It is always interesting to see animals tolerate other creatures that feed off of them. They usually each get something out of rhe exchange. Super sharp detail. Awesome shot! :-)
Scott

Absolutely brilliant, must be one of the best pictures on Trek Nature! It could be an illustration for a children's book - The Turtle, the Butterfly and the Bee!

Fantastic! Is he focusing on the fly to throw out his tongue like a frog to catch thy fly... ahh thats right they don't have tongues like that. Then he must be protecting his friend from that bee.....

I love this picture with brown to.... brown colors. It is just the butterfly that shows another color.

Maybe I would have cropped it a bit harder to expose that fantastic center of the image a bit more, because it's such unique moment you have captured. Maybe also increased the contrast/saturation just a little bit.

I also wish you wrote a bit about the computerwork on this photo and that you exposed the exif information.

I envy you this photograph!

Hello Paul,
Just time for a quick visit.
Nice capture. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Hello Paul
Well, you have done it again. This is a great capture with all three in focus. I like the monotones in the picture. Every shade of brown. Really nice shot.
Best
Kathy
