[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Yet another one from the Zongo valley - the Andean cloud forest.
I assume this is a fungus although I am not completely sure. In such a wet climate one can expect to find some fungus but also some strange insects.
This thing was growing on a raspberry plant and the color was so intense it looked unreal. There were a few of these balls all on the same plant.
Access was not easy so composition could be better - I am well aware of the leaf in the front...


The Andean Cloud forest runs along the eastern slopes of the Andes all the way from Colombia to Bolivia.

A cloud forest is a generally tropical or subtropical evergreen montane forest characterized by a high incidence of low-level cloud cover, usually at the canopy level.

Typically, there is a relatively small band of altitude in which the atmospheric environment is suitable for cloud forest development. This is characterized by persistent mist or clouds at the vegetation level, resulting in the reduction of direct sunlight and thus of evapotranspiration. Trees in these regions are generally shorter and more heavily stemmed than in lower altitude forests in the same regions, and the moisture promotes the development of an abundance of vascular epiphytes. This results in abundant moss and fern covering, and frequently flowers such as orchids may be found. Soils are rich but boggy, with a preponderance of peats and humus. Within cloud forests, much of the precipitation is in the form of fog drip, where fog condenses on tree leaves and then drips onto the ground below.

Hello Shir,
Interesting photo you've sent in. By just looking at it my first reaction was also that it was an exotic fungus, but when I think about the nature of the growth resembles a gall more than a fungus. Fungal growth of this type on trees tends to be smooth. The cause of the bright orange colouring could well be fungal but I guess this is a growth caused by a gall wasp or other insect, possibly covered by fungal growth.

Such resembling phenomenon am near us saw on shrub Dog Rose.Very nice details and amazing colours.Pretty contrast opposite dark background.Very interesting photo.
