Giant Green Mantid

Cleaning herself making pretty.

This was one of the strangest animal encounters I experienced. The Mantid fancied my hat so it hung around me for 2 days just crawling around the top of my head, it would let me pick it up with my hands and wouldn't try to fly away from me at all and everybody else was amazed how long it stuck around. At night time I would carefully take my hat off and set it down next to where I was sleeping,. I woke up the next morning found it squished...just kidding, well one night we went exploring at a clay lick and we sat waiting for tapirs to show up, in the meantime bats were flying very close to us, and then all of a sudden I felt this breeze of air with a swooshing sound. I went to check for the mantid and saddly it was snagged off my head by a bat. Why the mantid stayed with me I'll never know. Anyway here is a picture of her, she was very beautiful. I was sad. :(

Hi Paul,
Excellent fill flash exposure. Superb detail. I love mantids! zGreat job here. I really like the dark rich green color of this one. Around here they are much lighter in color.

Wow Paul, beautiful macro even though it came with a sad tale. I have never seen a mantid head this large with this kind of detail. Awesome.

Thanks, John

Hi Paul,
Nice macro. Great DOF and colour. The diagonal composition makes for a strong image. Did you use that RC1 system on this one?.
Cheers

Hi Paul

Pity to hear about your sad loss, but what you probably did not realise is that it was not your charming self that convinced her to stay. Sorry, I know that’s rather shattering for the ego, but she saw a heck of a big meal in you. Remember after mating the female mantis devours the male so actually you should be thankful that the bat saved you from being eaten piece by piece.

This is excellent macro work and I see you pulled a couple of fancy stops with the flash system as well. Stunning colours, amazing details, superb BG, and spot-on exposure.

Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Gracias y saludos... Ricardo
