Hello Trekkers,

Well I'm not gonna even try to list all the species of butterflies from this image but instead I'll tell you how the shot was taken. We were traveling the Heath river and I spotted a massive gathering of butterflies on the rivers edge, I signaled the boat driver to pull over, while that was happening I popped on my new 10mm fisheye jumped onto land an ran into the crowd firing my camera off, I could actually feel the butterfly wings all over me and hear the fluttering wings at the same time( I kinda felt like Walt Disney's Snow White except with a six'o'clock shadow and without the dress), what an experience and a rush! There must've been close to a thousand if not more. Butterflies of the Amazon and other river systems as well as oxbow lakes, can be found on the river or lake edges just about anywhere, this was the biggest gathering that I ever witnessed. They come there to lap up the minerals from the shore as an essential need in order to survive.

No butterflies were harmed in the making of this photo. :)

This isn't supposed to be a fantastic picture, it just so that you can see the amazing wildlife South America has, and the incredible encounter I had. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.

Hi Paul,
What an amazing scene. A truly magical experience it must have been. : )
That is the kind of experience we all dream of.
Well captured and thanks for sharing this special moment with us.
P.S. Your note cracked me up. This vision of you in a Snow White dress... and a tarantula on your face... : )

Excelente toma de las mariposas alimentandose de agua y minerales con todo su colorido es una suerte que podamos apreciar imagenes asi aun.
saludos
CARLOS

Quite the lala Land, just the way we like it. Absolutely I agree this a fantastic shot, the only thing that come close to it is that butterfly preserve in northern Mexico.

Your to funny!
It's nice to see butterflies doing what they do. Around here it's one butterfly here and one over there. I've never see a congregation of butterflies like this.

Wonderful detail, colours and POV. Thanks Janice

I think it's a great shot and shows some creative thinking. Using the fisheye was not something everybody would think of but it's perfect for this shot IMO. I like it, great work.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Paul,
amazing image report of this incredible gathering.
Very good idea to use a super wide angle that takes the viewer right into the crowd, and it provides a very good sharpness, too. Phantastic document! Thank you!
Best regards,
Peter

Hello Paul,
Wonderful picture. Wish to be in a place like this myself. Very well done.
JC

This is great! I've never seen so many and the fisheye definitely made this shot even more exceptional.
Great work!
