Owl Butterfly
Caligo memnon

The owl butterfly is one of Amazonia's largest butterfly species. (See huge larva)
The large eyespots on the wings serve either to scare a potential predator or to misdirect an attack away from the body (since predators will often first attack the eyes of prospective prey, in this case the butterfly's wings).

FW Length: 68-78 mm

Geographic Range: Occurs from sea level to 1400 m on the Pacific slope as a common species, but is much rarer on the Atlantic slope.

Host Plant (s): Heliconia (Heliconiaceae)

Unique Characteristics: Persistent throughout the year, but commonest during the rainy season.
Metamorphosis Time Life (days)
Egg 22
Caterpillar 60-70
Chysalis 22-30
Butterfly Life 21
Total Proccess: 125-143

The Owl Butterfly feeds exclusively on fermenting fruit. It’s a habit which can result in the giant butterfly literally keeling over in a drunken stupor.

Hola Paulo,
this is really a phantastic and perfect picture of an likewise perfect Caligo.
The sharpness is admirable and the colours are very natural so that I can enjoy the entire beauty of the
species including its brilliantly presented wing colour pattern.
I would like to give you more than one smiley but this is not possible!
I can't understand why other TN members do not appreciate your phantastic work!? With respect to quality, you can compare your picture with that of 'Mana' close by showing a specimen of Belenois aurota. At the time I write this comment Mana's picture received already 20 points and yours 0.
Best wishes, Peter

hello Paulo nice shot indeed Yes it is right quality and colour too Best regards Dany

TFS
