[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
During a walk in the Pantanal we saw this Least Pygmy-Owl (glaucidium minutissimum). I've had to make a big crop, because this owl is so tiny. Therefore the sharpness is not so very good. But...it’s another NEW ONE for TN.

IDENTIFICATION A very small pygmy owl (about 15cm). Wing-tips rather rounded.
Crown to back rather uniform warm brown, crown finely spotted whitish or pale buff, nape with occipital face, mantle plain. Off-white below, streaked rufescent, especially on flanks and lower breast; white patch around throat, bordered laterally by rufous-brown mottling and below by rufous- brown streaks. Tail with 3 – 4 visible whitish, laterally elongated spots. Eyes yellow.
VOCALISATIONS The song of the male is a rather high, hollow double note, somewhat drawn out, repeated at intervals of several seconds: hew-hew, hew-hew, hew-hew.
HABITAT Evergreen rainforest and forest edge, in tropical and subtropical climates. Seems to avoid secondary growth. Occurs from sea-level up to about 1,000 m; in SE Brazil, relatively common in foothills at altitudes of 500- 800 m.
MEASUREMENTS AND WEIGHT Total length about 15 cm. Wing 82.5-91mm; tail 57-59 mm; tail/wing ratio 0.62- 0.65. Weight about 50g, females heavier than males.
HABITS Partly diurnal, but active mostly at dusk and dawn. Behaviour little studied, but probably similar to that of other American pygmy owls, Relatively tame towards man. When seen by day, mobbed by small birds.
FOOD Mostly insects, but also small vertebrates.
BREEDING Virtually unknown. Probably breeds in abandoned holes of woodpeckers in trunks or larger branches,
STATUS AND CONSERVATION Uncertain. Found to be locally not rare in region between Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina. As the species seems to avoid secondary growth, it is doubtless threatened by logging activities in primary forest.

Hi Peter,

Great shot of this little owl. It stood up well even with the large crop. I love those eyes! Wonderful pose and composition with him in the angle of the branches.

Merci
Marie

Hi Peter,
Well composed frame with a good POV, detail, and color..
You managed the difficult light well, with good exposure of the shadowed side. Great BG too :)
Howard

Hi Peter,
How exciting this is to see a new specie isn't it? I like the light in this capture and the fact that the bird is well visible with no branches in the way, which is rare. You lack a little detail by cropping it a lot but we can appreciate nice patterns and colors. It has beautiful eyes :)! Congrats and thanks,
Claudine

Hello Peter,
The details are not that bad and the colors and choosen composition are great. Thanks for this and the addition to TrekNatures long list of species. Well done Peter.

Hello Peter, you've got some wonderful bokeh here. Although the lighting is not ideal - more backlit there, you've still achieved a good composition and nice pose with this gorgeous owl. tfs Rgds, Necip

Hi Peter,
