[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This photo is taken on a wooden bridge witch leads to a farm in the Pantanal.

In Brasil live five species of Caracaras. In the Pantanal are the Chimango Caracara and the Southern Caracara very common. This is an immature Southern Caracara or Crested Caracara (Caracara plancus or polyborus plancus). There are many of them around farms. They find a lot of food there. It is an omnivore, and will eat reptiles, amphibians and other small animals as well as carrion.

It’s with 56 cm length and 125 cm wingspan the largest of the Caracaras. They belong to the Falconidae.

The Crested Caracara is broad-winged and long-tailed. It also has long legs and frequently walks and runs on the ground. It is very cross-shaped in flight. The adult has a black body, wings, crest and crown. The neck, rump, and conspicuous wing patches are white, and the tail is white with black barring and a broad terminal band. The breast is white, finely barred with black. The bill is thick, grey and hooked, and the cere is red. This species has bare skin around the eye that can change color in seconds. Sexes are similar, but immature birds have a brown back, buff neck and throat, and pale breast streaked with brown. The voice of this species is a low rattle.

It’s a bird of open country, which nests in a tree or on the ground, laying 2 to 4 eggs.

The Crested Caracara is the national bird of Mexico.

Ben je zeker dat dit een Crested Caraca is?

Hallo Peter
Shame. This Crested Caracara looks as he has just been made fun of and don’t really know how to handle the situation. He looks heart broken, and I cannot help to feel sorry for him. It is such a lovely bird with beautiful feathers. I just love his facial expression. This is an excellent close up. An outstanding photograph, well presented. Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed looking at it.
Kind regards
Anna

Hello Peter,
Superb capture of the Crested Caracara in a fine pose, with good sharpness and from an excellent POV. Sometimes we have to take the opportunity when it comes, even if it means including man-made objects, like the bridge rail that this caracara is on. I mean if this were on a natural object this shot would have been close to perfect. As it is, IMHO it is excellent.
TFS,
Ivan

heel fraai Peter,

Hi Peter

A very beautiful capture from you...and i think i can say it's a very intimate one, too.
The caracara here seems absolutely undisturbed by your presence and following something completely different with its eyes. This fact actually makes the shot so natural and "free", perhaps sometimes more valuable than the shots with a direct eye-contact.
Other than that, the bird is presented with very nice sharp details, good colors and in an excellent DOF.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Peter,
The caracara has excellent DOF, detail, color, and exposure. It's well composed and the F/5.6 has blurred the BG well, isolating em' in the frame very well :)
Well done!
Howard
