Tocandira (giant ant)
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| Bullet ant (Paraponera clavata) ,so named because of their very painful sting, in Portuguese tocandira - " the one that hurts with its abdomen " - named on account of its powerful and potent sting, the sensation of which has often been likened with that of being shot with a bullet by those who have had the misfortune to be at its receiving end. The genus is found along the Atlantic coast of South and Central America. Workers are 18-30 mm (up to 1 inch) long. |
