[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This bird I captured in Barigui Park in my town Curitiba in southern Brazil. It is a White-backed Silt or Pernilongo-de-costas-brancas (Himantopus melanurus). When I spoted this beautiful bird something called my attention: There was a group of them among a group of quero-queros (Soutern lapwings)that are usually very territorial and agressive with other birds or any animals approaching to them. Also I was glad to see a new species after some years looking at the same guys. They are probably migratory and just visiting us for a while, but so I presume they come from south once we are in winter at very cool temperatures.

Distribution & Habitat:

The White-backed Stilt occurs from far southern Peru and central and north-eastern Brazil south to central Argentina. They are found on lakes, marshlands, river and sea shores, mangroves, wetlands etc. Their habitat naturally is always related to water.



Diet / Feeding:

They feed on insects, crustaceans and other small invertebrates in the sand or in the water with their slender bill.

Excellent photo of this White-backed Stilt photographed in this very beautiful part of your country. The colours are amazing with this contrast against the splendid BG. Fantastic sharpness and details and a perfect low POV. Great composition.
