[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is another photo from my archive of 2007. All these photos were taken in the wild.
I’ve got great memories of the Pantanal. This Green-winged Macaw was digging a hole in a tree. In the Pantanal the Green-winged Macaw (Ara chloroptera) also nests in trunk cavities and fights for its cavity against other birds. The manduvi palm (sterculia apetala) trunk is the favorite tree. It has a soft kernel that is easily hollowed when branches drop off, or are broken by woodpeckers, or fungi, termites or bacteria.

The Green-winged Macaw or Red-and-green Macaw (Ara chloroptera) is often mistaken for the Scarlet Macaw because of its predominantly red feathering. The breast of the Red-and-green Macaw is bright red, but the lower feathers of the wing are green. In addition, the Red-and-green Macaw has characteristic red lines around the eyes formed by rows of tiny feathers on the otherwise bare skin. In recent years there has been a marked decline in its numbers due to habitat loss and illegal capture for the pet trade.

Description
Some macaw owners and experts call the Green-winged Macaw the "gentle giant", as it is larger in size than the Scarlet Macaw and Blue-and-yellow Macaw, but has a more docile nature which often makes it a more desirable pet than the other two popular species. It is second only in size to the Hyacinth Macaw, the largest bird of the macaw family. The wingspan of the greenwing macaw can be up to 49 inches, with a total body length of 39 inches. A healthy adult will way between 1,250 and 1,700 grams. These birds can live up to 80 years in captivity.
The Green-winged Macaw feeds on various fruit.

Hello Peter,
What a fine archive you have, full of exotic bird species!
This is a fine capture of a Green-winged Macaw taken from an excellent POV on a tree trunk to show its features with fine colours, though perhaps a little over-sharp.
Great capture anyway,
Thanks and have a good weekend,
Ivan

Hello Peter!

I saw many pictures of macaws, but this one is really interesting. I like contrast between very colorfull and exotic bird and an old, dry tree. Very well composed shot.

Hi Peter,

It's always a delight to see your pictures from Brazil. This Green-Winged Macaw is wonderful posed so nicely on the tree. The colors are magnificent and the details are superb. I love the eye!

Jane

It is great to see these birds in wilderness, Peter.
I remember having seen a variety of such colourful birds in the pet shops in the entire Middle East and my strong desire to see them out of their cages. Your picture fulfils that desire.
This Macaw is a beauty.
Despite harsh lighting conditions, you have captured it very well on the trunk of a tree.

Hello Peter,
It must be wonderful to see this gorgeous Macaw in the wild! Even though the light was obviously very sharp here you got a fine capture showing it while digging a hole in the tree for its nest.
TFS and have a nice weekend, Ulla

Hi Peter,
Greatly composed, colorful shot of a wonderful parrot. You're lucky to see this beauty in the wild. I feel the pic a little oversharpened (or was the ISO too much?), but otherwise an excellent shot. Tfs.

Paul

Hi Peter,
such an exciting one here. The colours are so brilliant and the texture of the bark is very compleeting in making the shot beautiful. i like the light that fall onto the bird's feather, giving a nice shiny effect.

regards,
Foozi

Hola peter,
tus tomas, por un motivo o por otro, siempre son especiales. Bonito conjunto con un excelente encuadre. Colores quizá algo difuminados en algunas zonas.
