| Despite I have been diving for more than two years in Arraial do Cabo, it was the first time I saw (and lucklly photographed) an Eletric Ray (Narcine brasiliensis), known popularly in Brazil as "Treme-treme". I was trying to take a shot of a fish at the entrance of this small cave when I saw her lying in the sand. The eletric ray is quite easy to be recognised by its roundish head and the patterned colour. This one was quite small (a juvenile animal I suppose) but they can reach up to 54cm wide. They normally hide during the day and go out during the night to feed. Its name is due to two eletric organs at the sides of its head, which can produce an eletric discharge of up to 200 volts in some species. |
