This small plant (about 5 cm high) is a Peperomia quadrifolia (family Piperaceae), from the Itatiaia National Park, in Itatiaia-RJ. The family Piperaceae is a large family, with about 2500 tropical species. In the field, they can be recognized by simple leaves, with simple margins, swollen nodes and especially by their minute flowers borne in a spike.
Peperomia is a genus that contains about 1000 species, mostly epiphytes (or litophytes). Epiphytes and litophytes are under water stress, since they are not linked to the soil, so they depend on water from the rain, and on mechanisms to capture and retain it. Peperomias have succulent leaves because they store water, which represent an adaptation to water stress.
Another adaptation to water stress is the association with other plants, notably bryophytes and pteridophytes. These plants help storing water from rain, augmenting the Peperomia´s absorbance of water.
This particular Peperomia quadrifolia was growing on a rock in association with a bryophyte.
"Quadrifolia" means "four leaves", and it´s called like this because of its four-leaved nodes. |

Gabriel, your notes are good to read and to learn about this plant. I thought it looked like a succulent. Even the moss it is growing in looks good. For such a small plant this is a good shot of it. Thank you for sharing.
