| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note [Portuguese] |
The Owl butterfly:The butterflies that compose this genus are the giants of the Neo-tropics. The eggs of this specie are round (2mm in diameter), and are deposited in small to large groupings by the same female. This eggs can be inoculated by the eggs of tiny wasps, who act as a parasite. From one single inoculated egg, as many as 30 new wasps can be born. A significant proportion of eggs are killed by these wasps, and they can certainly be considered major predators in some Caligo population. The larvae are highly gregarious and can reach 12 centimeters long.
Habitat: It is widespread and common from sea level to 1,600 meters elevation in both slopes in Costa Rica.
Range: Mexico to the Amazon Basin. There is a sub-specie from Guatemala to Panama.
My note: Though this source mentions only the north region of Brazil, I personally verified that it is also common at the south. This I have shot in Rio de Janeiro

Very nice work.
Nice macro shot, Marcos.
It's little overexposure, I think you are little to close with the flash. Good composition, colours and details.
Well done.
Lovely b'fly Marcos, but unfortunately the shot is overexposed. This will be due to the flash being too close. Very good note. Thanks

Hi, Marcus. Liked your picture very well. Interesting butterfly which I have to observe closer when I go to Rio.
Interesting notes, too. It's just wonderful to see such large variety of b'flies in nature.
Thank you again.

Hello Marcos! This is a beautiful closeup of a butterfly. Wonderful colors, sharp details and good DOF. BG is a little grainy though. Good work and TFS!

Pieter
