Tillandsias: Rare and Unusual Plants
Tillandsias are true airplants. unlike most plants, they do not grow in soil, but gather nutrients from the air through their leaves. Tillandsias are not parasites. The scientific name for these plants is epiphyte. Tillandsias are a genus in the Bromeliad family of plants.
Tillandsias have exotic blooms. The following process can last up to a year. On many species the leaves can turn to bright colors during flowering, adding to their exotic blooming.
Tillandsias are extremely hardy plants. Many species are xerophytic as well as epiphytic, that is, they grow almost without water as well as without soil. Most will grow in temperatures from 32 degrees to 100 degrees.
