Borboleta Monarca:

A borboleta monarca, nome científico Danous plexippus, é uma grande borboleta cor-de-laranja e preta, comum na maior parte da América do Norte. É famosa pelas suas migrações anuais de e para o México e Califórnia, no Inverno. A borboleta monarca começa a sua vida como um ovo posto por uma fêmea adulta numa folha de planta de serralha, Asclepias syriaca. É do tamanho da cabeça de um alfinete. Quando o ovo choca, 3 a 12 dias depois, a pequena larva ou lagarta com riscas brancas, amarelas e pretas, tem oito pares de pernas curtas para trepar e partes da boca desenhadas para mastigar folhas vorazmente. Mas só as folhas das plantas de serralha, mais nenhuma. Agora a planta de serralha tem uma seiva branca e pegajosa que é altamente tóxica para os outros animais, mas não afetam em nada a lagarta, exceto para tornar o seu corpo altamente tóxico para os predadores, como pássaros que poderão gostar de comer lagartas ao pequeno-almoço. E todos os pássaros deixam-na em paz.
Enquanto a larva come incessantemente, ela cresce. Depressa ela torna-se grande demais para a sua pele, então a pele rasga-se e a lagarta sai com uma pele nova e maior, com mais espaço para crescer. Nas próximas duas semanas é isto que a lagarta faz: come folhas, cresce, muda de pele, come mais folhas, cresce mais, volta a mudar de pele. Todo este processo repete-se cinco vezes.
Finalmente ela para de comer, encontra um local protegido, pendura-se de cabeça para baixo, fia uma junta de seda e muda de pele mais uma vez. Mas desta vez o que emerge da pele velha não é uma lagarta maior, mas um embrulho compacto sem pernas, sem olhos e sem qualquer parte corporal visível, chamado ninfa, enclausulado numa crisálida. Não é multi-color como a lagarta, mas é verde claro com pontos dourados.
Não é observado qualquer movimento, mas no interior há muito a acontecer. O coração ainda bate, mas o resto dos órgãos internos parecem gelatina verde, enquanto toda a massa corporal se transforma numa criatura completamente diferente. A cor verde escurece, tornando-se castanha. Para um observador mal informado, parece um ser morto. Mas gradualmente a cor modifica-se, enquanto a crisálida fica transparente e podem ser vistas áreas cor-de-laranja e pretas. Estas são as cores da borboleta adulta.
Finalmente, após cerca de duas semanas, a crisálida abre-se e emerge uma borboleta adulta. Tem seis pernas compridas, uma boca que é um tubo probóscide enrolado, usado para aceder às flores, para beber o seu néctar e dois pares de asas franzidas que rapidamente se expandem ao ser bombeado fluido corporal para as suas veias. Ao expandirem, a borboleta agita-as lentamente para a frente e para trás com os recentemente adquiridos músculos de voo, até elas secarem e tornarem-se rijas, prontas para voar.
Em breve a borboleta descola do chão, lançando-se no ar, podendo ser vista no jardim de alguém a beber néctar de uma flor, com o seu probóscide desenrolado, ou voando por cima das nossas cabeças à procura de um companheiro para recomeçar todo ciclo novamente.

What a beautiful presentation!
I like a lot this first plane of the butterfly, in a nice pose, showing us all its colours.
But which I like the most is the wonderful background got, the bokeh is so beauty.

Muy bella la foto de esta Monarca. Tengo el gusto de verlas pasar en su largo viaje desde Canada hasta Michoacan aqui en Mexico. Son unas mariposas extraordinarias de hermosos colores.

Hi Nilson!

You present us a wonderful Monarch, very well put on stage. I also like the blurred background with the coloured spots.

From the technical point of view, I believe the picture is a bit overexposed and the lights are too bright, partially burnt.

Nice capture of a Monarch butterfly on lantana flowers. This is pretty sharp and the OOF BG sets it off nicely but it would be better to compose the image with the butterfly more to the left and less centrally composed.

Nice shot of this Monarca. Nicely composed with good focus detail, color, and pleasing BG bokeh. The yellow flower seems a bit OE. If you have exposure compensation tool on your camera it may have been helpful to use -1/3rd stop to darken a bit.

When I was a child I used to follow this kind of butterfly. It is common insect in most of Iranian Garden. And for me is always joyful to watch them. Nice shot with very good composition and perfect exposure.
