[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Taturana ou tatarana (do tupi Semelhante ao fogo, parecido à Xana) é o estado larvar (lagarta) das Mariposas (Brasil) ou traças (Europa) do género Lonomia e outras. Estas lagartas têm pilosidades e são potencialmente perigosas. Há algumas espécies com venenos poderosos, como a Lonomia obliqua, denominadas "taturanas assassinas", que podem provocar hemorragia, insuficiência renal e até levar à morte. Nos Estados do sul do Brasil chegaram a ocorrer mais de mil casos de acidentes com lagartas do gênero Lonomia, vários destes resultando em morte. Pesquisas da ESALQ indicam que a proliferação destas deve-se ao fato de vários predadores naturais (contra os quais, curiosamente, os pêlos não são defesa) terem desaparecido com a devastação do ambiente natural. Desta forma, as taturanas, que antes alimentavam-se das folhas da aroeira e do cedro, passaram a alimentar-se das folhas de árvores dos pomares, diminuindo assim a distância do habitat humano e aumentando a incidência de acidentes.

This is a really fascinating and colourful image of this larva. Looking at the thumbnail I thought is was a photo of underwater plants. Great was my surprise when I enlarged it and it turned out to be the larva of a butterfly. The red of the plant is bright and the details of the larva is captured and displays excellently. The thorniness of the larva reminds me of a pine tree's leaves. I cannot find fault with this image. The subject fills the frame perfectly enabling us to see the clear detail of the larva and the plant. The focus and sharpness is great, and your presentation is done remarkably well. Thanks for sharing.

A beautiful Lonomia larva in splendid contrast to the velvety flower Henrique, both in fine focus and nicely isolated from the BG by the right choice of a shallow DOF. Good job, my friend.
