High point of my visit in Brazil was the Pantanal. A 170.000 km2 large wetland. During the wet season, up to 80% of the region is under water, a perfect environment for aquatic birds, reptiles and fish.
For six days I stay at fazendas. And for one day we take part in the Hyacinth Macaw Project of the WWF. We did investigation of nest of the Macaws.
The Hyacinth Macaw Project involves research, management and conservation of the species. In carrying these out, biologists, veterinarians, field workers, ranchers and university students share in activities ranging from technical studies on reproduction, behaviour and habitat to environmental education.
Begun 1990 the project monitors about 3.000 individual birds over an area of 450.000 hectares in the Pantanal region, where there are 346 natural nests and 198 artificial ones.
Farm workers and ranchers began to support the work and today take pride in the Macaws, that live in the region.
Treatened with extinction, the Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) is outstanding because of its beauty and because it is the largest Macaw in the world; approximately one meter from the tip of its bill to its tail and weighing about 1,3 kg.
We’ve seen a lot of them.

Hello, Peter. There is a mistake in the data above, for the "Pantanal" is not in the state of Rio Grande do Sul - it's in the western region of Brazil, in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.

As for the image, a lovely one.

Great moment, great sharpness and beautiful blue sky.

Congratulations.

Hi Peter

Superb capture of this Hyacith Macaw - great frozen action!

I am planning a trip to the same location in 2009.

Hi Peter,
Very nice image, difficult to take because is an endangered bird, rare to see in its natural environment. Thanks for sharing
Hernán

A fabulous inflight shot. I haven't learned to do these yet. I get too much backlight when I try. I know they're not easy.
Great action - great color!

I wish that I can see this critters in the wild one-day... We have only two species of parrots that stil roam wild. But they do not compare to this one in size or color. Great catch.

Hi Peter,
It's a very nice in-flight capture of this Hyacinth Macaw with a very good POV, focus, sharpness, pose and colors. TFS
Best wishes,
Selen

Hallo Peter,
Leuke plaat.
Bedankt
Annick
