I am not sure if you know how difficult is to take a good shot of a flying gannet ;-). Especially when you are on a ship. Gannets and boobies are very fast and they are playing with a ship. I spent 2 days trying to get a good shot of masked booby. I posted one recently.

On these shot there are some problems with exposure on white parts but I like POV and it is the only shot with ocean as background. That is why I decided to post another booby.

The masked booby plunges head first into the ocean to catch flying fish and squid. It can dive from distances of over 90 feet. I have seen boobies chasing flying fish above the water surface for 30-40 meters.

The masked booby is the largest of the booby family. It is a little under three feet in length and its wingspan is a little over five feet. I posted a note on masked booby with my earlier phot so these time a short note about family Sulidae.

Sulidae in Polish: gluptakowate

The bird family Sulidae comprises the gannets and boobies. Both groups are medium-large coastal seabirds that plunge-dive for fish. The species in this family are often considered congeneric, placing all in the genus Sula. However, bones of Sula (boobies) – 6 species and Morus (gannets) 3 species at least can in most cases be readily distinguished. There is also third genus Papasula with only one species.

If you wan to see phylogeny of Sulidae click here.

Hejka!
Widze, ze jednak siedzisz w Lodzi a nie w Sopocie ;)
Ciekawy obiekt i calkiem przyzwoite zdjecie.
Pozdrawiam,
Radek

Hi Krzysztof.
I know how difficult to take any bird with compact camera. You are right the feathers are OE. But timing. Sharpness and other details are great. My best wishes and TFS. Great experience.
Alexei.

Hello Krzysztof,
I would very much liked to have made such an in-flight capture of a Masked Booby. This required a good panning technique, especially on board a ship. I agree that the dark ocean makes a fine contrasting BG and your light management is excellent.
Thanks for sharing another image of this rare gannet,
Ivan

Hi Krzystof

You are right, my friend: i have no idea how hard it is to take a picture of such bird, especially from a bird. But knowing you and knowing that you always give out useful and correct information with your posts, i can only imagine...
Yet i see here a very sharp in-flight shot.
The details and colors on the gannet are terrific and they contrast very well with the beautiful color of the sea.
It's too bad that the right wing is clipped :( But i think i have a way in which you could mask that: how about cropping the picture in the lower part so that both wings would be cut and the focus would be only in the head :) Just a thought.
Anyway, nice work!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Krzysztof,
Fantastic in-flight shot and though there are areas of OE it looks fabulous. The sea as BG looks awesome and the DOF here is precise. Superb composition. Kudos.
TFS.

Hello
Nice capture! Wonderful! TFS.
Greetings,

Hi Krzysztof,
Nice to see this masked booby in flight. To take picture of a bird on the ground is very difficult for me not to mention a bird in the sky. Thanks for sharing this wonderful image.

Hi Krzysztof, lovely bird in splendid fly, good details and excellent sharpness, wonderful POV, very well done, have a great week end, ciao Silvio

Hi Chris!
Please forgive me for the delayed reciprocation. I had an awfully busy work schedule these past couple of days.
~
Coming to your picture of this sea bird you shot in South America, you have done a wonderful job. I know it is not easy to shoot a flying bird even in normal conditions. That you have done this shot from a moving ship makes your effort doubly difficult.
Don't worry over the OE white parts; the brown of the wings contrasts very well with the white. The details on the wings are sharp and clear. I also like the deep blue sea for BG.
Well done and TFS.

Hi Chris,
A nice capture of this flying gannet. Although it is a difficult shot but also a rare thing. You have done very well to it. But a little more crop at the bottom should have looked even better I suppose. Anyway its just my thought. Excellent capture. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Krzysztof,
I faced the same problem with the boobies :o) I liked your POV here, and the blue sea in the background looks very nice.

Best wishes,

Hi Krzysztof,

Unusual perspective on this gannet - not often you see them from above with the sea as a backdrop. It's really interesting! I love the detail in the wingfeathers and the head and feathers are really nice. Great shot.

Hello Krzysztof

Wow what an interesting POV.
The angle is very interesting and the deep blue water makes a neat back drop.
The plumage detail is wonderful.
Great job.
