Although I’ve seen them walking in a large group on a big grassland in the Pantanal, this photo is from the birdpark near the Iguazu Falls. The birds on the grassland were to far away to make a photo of them.

The Crested Screamer (Chauna torquata), more commonly called the Southern Screamer, belongs to the Order of Anseriformes. This bird is found in Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Its diet consists of plants stems, seeds, leaves, and, rarely, small animals. It is about 80 cm. long and lives in swamps, estuaries and pool coasts.

The Crested Screamer is a good swimmer but prefers to move on the ground. The bony spurs on their wings are used for protection against rival screamers and other enemies. Although it is non-migratory, it is an excellent flier. They are normally seen in pairs but sometimes gather in large groups if there is a food in one place.

It establishes monogamous relationships that last a lifetime. Its lifespan is estimated to be 15 years. For the nest the couple makes a big platform of reeds, straws and other aquatic plants, in inaccessible places. The female lays between two and seven white eggs. Incubation takes 43 to 46 days and the couple take turns during this period. The chicks leave the nest as soon as they break the eggshell but the parents take care of them for several weeks. The fledging period takes 8 to 14 weeks.

Hello Peter,
What a fascinating bird, I expect it makes a terrible noise with a name like that! Interesting fluffy plumage and fine colours very well captured. It would be interesting to see the whole bird too! A fine portrait in good light.
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi Peter,

A wonderful portrait of this strange looking bird. With a name like that he must make a lot of noise. He looks so fluffy - you have captured the texture of his feathers well. Nice natural colors, good details and a wonderful background.

Hi Peter

Thought I had done a crit of this - I must be losing it!

Great clos-up shot with good detail. You have caught the fluffy feathers round the head and neck very well.

I am having to change on of my trips this summer and am considering the Pantanal as an alternative - which places did you stay in? Where is the Iguazzu birdpark - I have been twice and wasn't aware of one?

Thanks

James

Hello Peter,
Nice close portrait of a Southern Screamer. Though it is a bit noisy (I mean the image, not the Screamer!), the sharpness is excellent and the composition against a dark natural BG is superb.
Thanks for sharing this one,
Ivan

Hello Peter,
what a funny bird! It definately looks ready to scream!! :-D
Great composition and POV.
Nice colours and an even exposure.
The only minus is that it's a bit noisy but the image as a whole is still very good!
Well done,
Joe

Hi Peter, splendid portrait of this strange bird, splendid details and great blurry BG, excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Screamer...name kind of reminds me of the type of thing found at a "rave" party. And now I think I know where all of todays kids come up with unusual hair styles. Funny how we pattern ourselves in a projected way with nature. It does leave some hope that even if subconsciously, kids are actually seeing.
Very fine and sharp image of an aviary creature I was unfamiliar with until this post and notes..Very nicely done sir!

No wonder such a beauty lives close to the Iguazu falls in Brazil, Peter! What a fantastic bird that you captured with sharpness and elegance. The blurred green background contrasts nicely with the greyish tones of the feathers, mostly with the pink bill. This is an original bird captured with skills and knowledge, framed perfectly. Thank you!

Francine

Hi peter,

Again what a curious bird you're showing us today. He stands very well against the nice blurry background. Good details in the plumage, really like the tight crop as it emphasises the funny look on his face. Well done!

Lise

Hello Peter,

What a strange crest!! Excellent close-up with with well mastered exposition letting us see the different grey tones of the feathers... Nice bg also which enhances very well the grey bird... It looks like a grey poodle ;-)

Cheers and TFS!

Hallo Peter
When I saw this photo it reminded me of a music clip I saw on TV some time ago. It was a programme on songs out of the 60's. I cannot recall the singer (I think it is Jerry somebody) but he was singing "In the Summertime" That guy had side whiskers like this bird. Those years that terrible side whiskers was high fashion for men. This is a good-looking portrait of yet another bird I have now been introduced to for the first time. What a strange and inquisitive bird. Great sharpness and details. It seems to be proud of its hair-do and makeup, and it looks as if it is posing just for you. Great job! Thank you very much for this new guy and the note about it.
Kind regards
Anna

Hi Peter
