[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
After a week of skiing in the Alps of Austria I’m back with a new photo.
Before I put two photos of a Jabiru here on TN. This time a flying one. It was nesting time. I only got one chance to take a photo of this Jabiru. I had to take this photo between a lot of branches. So I missed a piece of its toes. But I hope you like it.

The Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) is a large stork found in the Americas from Mexico to Argentina, except west of the Andes. It is most common in the Pantanal region of Brazil and the Eastern Chaco region of Paraguay. It is the only member of the genus Jabiru. The name comes from the Tupi-Guaraní language and means "swollen neck".

Description
The Jabiru is the tallest flying bird found in South America, often standing around the same height as the flightless and much heavier American Rhea. The adult size of Jabirus ranges up to 1.5 m tall, 2.8 m across the wings, and a weight of at least 8 kg . The beak, up to 30 cm long, is black and broad, slightly upturned, ending in a sharp point. The plumage is mostly white, but the head and upper neck are featherless and black, with a featherless red stretchable pouch at the base. The sexes are similar, although the female is usually smaller than the male. While it is an ungainly bird on the ground, the Jabiru is a powerful and graceful flier.

Habits
The Jabiru lives in large groups near rivers and ponds, and eats prodigious quantities of fish, mollusks, and amphibians. It will occasionally eat reptiles and small mammals. It will even eat fresh carrion and dead fish, such as those that die during dry spells, and thus help maintain the quality of isolated bodies of water.
The nest of twigs is built by both parents around August–September (in the southern hemisphere) on tall trees, and enlarged at each succeeding season growing to several meters in diameter. Half a dozen nests may be built in close proximitiy, sometimes among nests of herons and other birds. The parents take turns incubating the clutch of 2 to 5 white eggs.

Nice to see you back and in full form (and in one piece, after your skiing adventure, hahaha). Great inflight shot of this beautiful Jabiru. Hi Peter,
I think I have never seen this strange bird before. It is very contrasted with this black head and you managed exposure well by letting us see nice details on the pale and dark parts. You also caught a nice action and all this while it is flying which is not easy. You are lucky to have skied in the Alps! I love ski but because of a leg problem, I didn't do some this winter for the first time in my life :( I hope I’ll have the chance to do some before the end of the season… Greetings,

How did I miss this one? Fantastic timing to get this wonderful in flight shot of this stork. Amazing how many sticks he is carrying for his nest. Wonderful colors, details, and setting. It is really fascinating to see pictures of birds performing their daily tasks. This is a winner!

Hallo Peter
I have commented on this bird before in one of your previous postings, describing it as a persons hand in a puppet show. Looking at this image of the bird in flight I can only see a beautiful and most spectacular bird with the most impressive wingspan. Just love the long black beak and of course the round black eye with that catch light that is so obvious and clear, even from a distance. Good focus, well framed and sharp details. Thanks for sharing.
