We were in a small village Casimiro de Abreu, north of Rio on a fazenda. Behind the fazenda was a big garden. In that garden were many birds. The owner loves birds very much and every day the woman of the owner put some fruit on the branches of the trees and bushes. She knows all the names of the birds, except for one bird. During years she is trying to identify this bird.
So she asked me to put this bird on internet and wait for the reactions. In August last year came a reaction of Steve Pryor (Cuckooroller). He knew its name: the Turquoise Tanager(Tangara mexicana). And I mailed photos and name to Brazil.

Most of the races of this Tanager have a yellow belly. But this is race brasiliensis and it has a white belly. An adult.
13 cm / 14 cm. In pairs or small groups, often in mixed flocks of 5 -10 birds.
Found in high levels with forest.

Hello Peter!
This is a very original (especially in colouration) bird species. It is very good exposed against to delicate background. On the other hand I believe that a little better DOF would be nice, or the picture was sharpned a little too much (or cropped?).
Anyway, thanks to your bird hobby I can learn a lot about birds from all around the world, and thank you for that!
Best greetings and have a nice Easter Holidays!
Radomir

Hello Peter,
Excellent capture of this beautiful Tanager from a nice POV. The bright turquoise colour on the wing cowerts seems to be missing but maybe ít's a young one. Great focus, sharp details and fine colours against a nice soft background.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hello Peter,
Fine capture of a Turquoise Tanager with good sharpness and contrasting well against a fine bokeh BG in a fine composition. Perhaps the turqoise colours irridesc only at certain angles.
Congratulations on posting a great shot of new species on TN and thanks for sharing it.
Have a good easter weekend,
Ivan

Hi Peter

Very interresting bird. I must say that I cannot remember seeing it before. Steve is a 'mamba' and a great help on this site with his knowledge of birds.

You managed to capture good details in the plumage and represented it with fine contrasts. The colours seems natural and I like the almost single-toned BG the makes the bird stand out very well.

Good work and TFS.
