Crotophaga ani.

This is the "Anu-preto". In English, smooth-billed ani.

Height: 14"

Description
A sociable, dark bird that, at a distance, resembles a grackle. It is distinguished from a grackle by an oversized, thick bill that grows out of the top of the head. Tail is very long, may be bobbed and wagged, and is often held beneath body. On close inspection, feathers on upper breast and back are
lined with iridescent silver, and appear scaled.

Voice
A thin and rising, "kweeeelik" made upon close approach. Audio is available at eNature.com.

Feeding
Feeds in large groups. One or two birds are assigned as look-outs while the rest of the birds feed in a flock on the ground or among reeds and brush. Have seen birds that are hunting feed the look-outs.

Hi Livio,

Fun to see your reference to Wakodahatchee in the source. I live about five miles from there, and often guide tours for the Palm Beach County Water Department as well as private parties.

This is one of the best--if not the best--photos of an Ani that I've ever seen. We truly do get some gifted photographers on this site. Worth mentioning, as well, that it is a member of the cuckoo family.

Hi Livio, this is a new bird to me. Well caught. It looks a little like a lizard running along the leaves, (yes, funny imagination I have). Good compo and details too. Well shown, thank you.
