With a strikingly interesting appearance, it is no wonder that the Crested Caracara is Mexico's national bird. These animals are quite resourceful, and when finding food will cleverly take full advantage of every opportunity afforded them.

In the wild, Crested Caracaras inhabit open brush lands. They can hunt insects and small animals. They feed mostly on carrion. Sometimes, the Caracara will visit carrion only for the potential to uncover insects in the carcass. Crested Caracaras will also harass other birds, even those as big as buzzards, until they drop their food for the Caracara. Their long talons aid the Crested Caracara in scratching the ground to unearth insects. Their long legs allow them to wade in search of frogs. These birds will also eat sick young livestock, turtle eggs, fish and even small turtles. Crested Caracaras make different sounds for alarm (shrieking), protest (repeated clucking sounds), and mating (repeated clicks ended by a drawn out trilling noise). During mating season, male Crested Caracaras will fight each other for females in mid-flight.

Hi Livio!
Very nice shot.I liked harmonious colors and composition very much.TFS...:-)

Hello Livio, This has a nice alert pose and a great POV. Very good colors and details in your national bird. We can't always pick our BG - I would say that this shot would be even greater with a darker BG that contrasted with your subject..Still, Very well done!

Wagner.

A very handsome raptor and very well captured. As usuual the composition is great. Cool bare soil background provides a good contrast. Great shot Livio.

Proud is best describing this bird word. Great pose and colour tones. I like sand in BG - real Mexican, desert mood.

Beautiful photo Livio!
Everything is perfect here.
I like especially this lovely model and great colours.
Very well done!

I have never see before. Congratulations. Very nice pose and original head, bill and paw.

This photo seems to be a study in warm tones, Livio.
A very striking appearance and regal stature in this pose as well.
Well captured, thank you.

Lovely shot Livio,
Nicely composed, good sharp detail and nice colours.
He does look very regal.
Thanks for posting

it is a beautiful bird, with a nice pose Livio...
very well done...

What a proud bird. We say in french "the king is not his cousin". Great majestuous pose. At first I was disturbed by the BG color, but finally, it's blurred aspect against the sharp subject work very well. Lot's of atmosphere in your shot, Livio.

Mexican ir not, I always loved the caracara, reminds me a lot of the African secretary bird, too bad the clay colour changes the mood completely in the photo, i want to try a workshop later on it.

Hi Livio, what a beautiful creature. It is easy to understand why it's a national symbol.
Like Howard said it would be great to have some contrast BG, but in these conditions it's a great capture with an very well composition.
Well done.

Hello Livios,

Details are sharp and colors are lovely. The complimentary BG color is very nice but it doesn't make the bird stand out that much. Pose of the bird is great, composition is very good and so are POV and DOF. Well done. TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hello Livio,
A nice capture and what a striking pose!
Nice tones of colour and excellent composition.
Good work,very well done.

Great POV, and a lovely subject. Details are great. The BG takes away some of the impact because it does not contrast enough with the subjetc details. Especially in the head and neck area. It's a minor nit and still a lovey capture. Well done, Livio.
