Blue-gold macaw (Ara ararauna)

Life span: 70-90 years
Age at Weaning: 16-20 weeks
Age at Maturity: 3-5 years

Northern South America, Brazil

Temperament:
These are the most common large macaw in pet stores and homes. They are incredibly active and playful, yet can calm down enough for a good head scratch. They are affectionate with their owners, but sometimes shy or aggressive with others. They are notorious chewers with their large beaks and very active, so many toys and a large cage is necessary.

Talking Ability:
Moderate to Good

This picture was taken at the Bird Park (Parque das Aves) in Foz do Iguacu in Brazil.

The Bird Park has more than 900 birds of 150 species. The majority of them are Brazilian birds. A third of these species are endangered. All birds seen in the Park originate from zoos, breeders authorized by IBAMA or rehabilitation centres. The Bird Park does not accept birds of unknown origin. All animals are registered and an annual report is given to the Brazilian Zoological Society and IBAMA.
Some of the birds are rehabilitated but cannot be returned to nature.

Personally for any lover of birds and photographer this park deserve a visit because of the amount of possibilities to capture on film a lot of different colorful species flying around you in the large walkthrough aviaries.

I wish my visit would have been longer in the park but I only had less than an hour to visit it before closing.

It may have some noise in the picture has it was getting dark at this time and was in the giant aviary where the macaws just fly all around me. Pretty impressive.

I am happy with the results while taking in consideration the following parameters:
1/30 sec at 160mm, no tripod. Comments and critiques are more than welcome.

Hi Stephan,
Good sharp detail and colours. Great POV.
Nicely composed and good exposure.
Thanks for posting. Have a great weekend.

Likely one of if not THE best macaw portrait i`ve seen , it has such vibrant and natural colors, the sharpness is flawless perfection. I love the stance, it has so much personality.

You've done well under very adverse conditions Stephan. Nice results at ISO 1600 (I've never gone there yet BTW). Excellent note - Great shot! Thank You.

Hey! Bon portrat Stephane!

Exposition et focus dans le mille. L'ISO 1600 ne se fait pas trop sentir. L'arrière plan bien flou me plait bien.
Bref une belle réussite, bravo!

Very nice portrait shot of this beautiful Blue & Gold Macaw with a Nice DOF & POV. :)
