Roadside Hawk (Buteo magnirostris)

Status: lower risk
Population Trend: increasing.

Other Names: Insect Hawk, Large-billed Hawk, Rupornis magnirostris, Tropical Broad-winged Hawk.

Distribution: neotropical. Northeastern MEXICO south to western ECUADOR and throughout South American east of the Andes to eastern PERU and ARGENTINA; accidental in UNITED STATES (Texas).

Taxonomy: formerly placed in a separate genus, Rupornis, or in Asturina. Closely related to B. platypterus, B. ridgwayi, B. lineatus, and B. nitidus (= Asturina nitida), all of which may be more closely to Leucopternis than to Buteo (see Stresemann 1960). The subspecific boundaries are complex and need further study; the treatment of Bierregaard (1994) is followed here. Stresemann and Amadon (1979) included the Mexican and Middle American populations formerly called argutus, direptor, petersi, and xantusi in griseocauda. Both ecuadoriensis and insidiatrix are included here in the nominate race, and inca is lumped in occiduus. Brown and Amadon (1986) also lumped ruficauda in petulans.

Movements: local migrant.

Habitat and Habits: lowlands and middle elevations. Prefers edges of second-growth and primary forest, broken woodland, arid tropical scrub, savannas with scattered trees, and even suburbs, woodlots and parks in cities. Frequently moves from perch to perch across clearings alternating flaps with glides. Does not soar particularly often.

Food and Feeding Behavior: large insects, birds, small mammals (including roosting bats), and reptiles. Hunts by dropping from a low perch onto prey on the ground.

The hawk looks beautiful. Good approach from downside. Is like the bird is looking from the sky to the ground, like they usualy do when hunting.

Regards, Petru

Clear, sharp and well taken. Well done

Beautiful bird Livio!
Great detail!
Makes one ready to take up falconry...;-)
I just finished reading James Clavell's "Shogun" for the second time. (1st read fall of 1980) This is the only novel I've ever read twice. They did alot of hunting with hawks in the book.
Excellent picture!
Thanks,
Dave

Nice shot Livio!
I like the blue BG a lot, though maybe it would've been better o cut it a bit more.
Good details on the bird and nice lighting.
I like it.
WELL DONE!

I love the pose on this one, Livio. The back of it is a bit overexposed, but it is a very interesting POV. There seems to be a separation between the top of his body (with the wings) and the bottom of his body (with the legs). I can't figure it out. Weird!
TFS. : )

Hi Livio,
a majestic bird - and a good low POV.
Against the blue sky - that's always wonderful.
I like his impessive yellow eye, thanks for sharing, bye and greetings

O 'danado' só fica em lugares muito altos... nunca consegui uma boa foto... He...He...
A sua está excelente. Conseguiu uma boa nitidez e composição.
