[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Earlier today, I had the chance to take some shots. It's been raining a lot here. Besides, I've been working very much.

The pictures above show the same species in different phases. They were landed close to each other. Although I couldn't avoid some overexposure on the bird on the right, the image is here, for my intention is to show how the colors of the species may change.

The White-tailed Hawk is a raptor of open country that is fairly common and found from the southern USA to Argentina but is not found in the Amazon forest.

It is a large hawk with long wings and its most notable features are the large rust-coloured spot on its shoulder and its white tail with broad black subterminal band.

The neck and head are ashy grey and its underparts are very white but with fine barring that you can see on its sides and thighs. The cere is pale green and its feet are yellow.
It can often be seen high up in the sky appearing motionless for minutes on end as it hovers into a strong wind while surveying the ground below for prey. It eats a wide variety of animals ranging from snakes and lizards to rabbits, rats and giant earthworms.

In flight from below note the long, pointed wings pinched in at the base towards the rear. These pale morph birds are very white below and the subterminal black tail band is conspicuous.
It is often seen near grass fires where it preys on animals that are flushed by the fire. In some parts of Brazil it is called "Gavião fumaça" ("smoke-hawk").

How interesting, Livio.
I would never have thought that these two are of the same species.
At the risk of sounding totally ignorant, does "phase" have to do with the season or with the stage of maturity of the individual?
Thanks for the informative notes. : )

Hi Livio, if you hadn't told me I would have thought they weren't the same species. The white one seems to have larger eyes too. I guess the dark one is a juvemile?
Good shots of the 2 of them,
Well captured, thank you
Janice

This is a very informative and excellent diptych, Livio. The side by side view really communicates a lot here!

Very nice photos showing us the difference in age progression, the information is very informative. :)

What a majestic capture,we have lots of them in our area but they stay up high in the tree and of course right on the highways...
Great shot....
Cecilia

Hello Livio!
Very nice captures and presentation.Details,POV
and framing are wonderful on both frame.
TFS...:-)

A nice, contrasting pair Livio.
I note some of the comments above, so for some extra information: Colour phases in raptors are not age or sex dependent - a dark phase bird will be dark for its entire life. Also, in many raptors the males and females have virtually identically sized eyes, but the females are usually significantly larger. Therefore, males have proportionately larger eyes than females!
Regards, Nigel.

Livio, they're great pictures. Great colours, excellent sharpness and POV. This is a very nice presentation. Well done. Thank you for posting.
