Shooting this was rather funny.

At first, the bug, which I think is a cricket, was inside a hole. I shot twice while he was there. Then, when he left, I was surprised about his skill to jump. Proportionally, I wouldn’t say he’s able to jump as powerfully as a flea, but he can almost match one of them.

Thus, in order to shoot, I had to chase the bug, going after his jumps. As soon as I got a satisfactory focus, he jumped, making me chase him. As I got a focus, he jumped again and so on. After five or six jumps, he stood still for a few seconds, allowed me to come closer and to shoot once.

He has approximately 3 centimeters. I could've tried f/7.1 or f/8, for instance, to improve the depth of field, but the day was cloudy, so that light conditions were not that good. I used ISO 50. In my camera, higher ISO tends to produce grainy pictures, which requires a lot of post-processing, and I'm not that skilled yet to deal with the softwares properly...

I reckon your ID is about right, this is indeed a cricket of some sort. However, it's not a "he" cricket, as those don't have the thingey at the back (an ovipositor for laying eggs) only the females have that ;-))
I would have liked to see you worming around on the ground in order to get this ;-))
DOF seems okay to me, you even have the long antennae within range. Good colours, too.

Livios, Good details, DOF & I like yout POV. This Bg makes a very bright shot overall. Good notes, Well done!

Your bug belongs in the order Orthopterans and is related to crickets. Localy these here in New Zealand are known as Wetas a wounderfull website on these can befound here http://weta.boarsnest.net/index.htm I belive several other members have posted weta photos.

Good DOF and POV and nice colours.

There is stream in sf literature called steam punk, Bruce Sterling started it with help of William Gibson. It describes reality with high tech devices propelled by steam engines. Aircrafts, automobiles even computers :-) Everything is made of brass and shinning. And I though about this devices when I saw your picture - this insect is perfect for steam punk reality. Great work Livio!

What an ugly insect!!!
But your photo exellente! I love your precision and your note too. Great job!

Boa macro. Cores. Contraste.
Obrigado
Reynaldo

Very sharp all over, good colors. A lower POV, slightly more in front would have been better IMHO, to get some details from the head. All together, a very good macro, Livio, with a very good POV considering the aperture.
