Geographic Range

Black Vultures are resident in tropical and warm temperate from southern Canada to southern South America including continental United States of America. In the northern parts of their range they have a southward migration in the fall and a returning spring migration.

Habitat

The Black Vulture prefers an open habitat and avoids dense forests as much as possible. Such habitats include lowlands with adjacent highlands, open fields, desert terrain, garbage dumps, and urban or rural centers.

Physical Description

The Black Vulture is a... black, large bird with a wingspan of 137-152 cm, a length of 50-69. The sexes are alike and the adults and the young have black, wrinkled bare skin on the head and neck. Adults have brown. Black Vultures have weak feet, adapted more for running than for clutching and relatively weak bills. The black vulture's feet stretch past its short tail. In flight, a short, square tail and a large white patch on the undersurface of the wing at the base of the primaries distinguishes them from turkey vultures, another large new world vulture which often occurs in the same area. These birds have been observed to live as long as 21 years in captivity and the oldest wild captured banded bird was 16 years old.

TFS...:-)

Hola Livio,

Ricardo

Very good capture my friend of this spectacular plumage.
In spite of capturing a point of view not very habitual, the details of the bird are very good due to an exact DOF and focus, besides the control of the light and a correct out of focus on the background.
The best greetings... Ricardo

Hi Livio

High quality shot. Beautiful colour tones and perfect composition. Thank you my friend! :-)

What a sharp image of this odd bird. It is fun to look at those feathers because they are so sharp.

Nicely done Livio.
I like this. You have managed a unique POV and the wings are spread like a skirt or cape as you say..could this by Zoro incarnate? :)
Very sharp, excellent exposure & use of F/5.6 isolating the subject in the frame. The OOF split BG works well, bringing in those dark greens as well.
Have a nice weekend mf.

Oi Livio, magnífica definição, cores e BG, além da captura de um momento bem inusitado.

What an excellent catch Livio. It looks like a group of people all sheltering under the feathered cloak! I like how the sun is shining down on him too, as his feathers stand out that way. Well done,
Janice

Hi Livio,
Apt title and an excellent image!

Quite the moment you have captured!

Thank & TFS,

Dave

Proves your mettle as a photographer of extraordinary talent, Livio. This image is nothing short of a masterpiece in my opinion.
What a candid shot of this black vulture grooming itself unaware of your presence!
The "caped" figure stands out so very beautifully against an extremely versatile BG. That dappled light there leaves me speechless.

ram

Hello Livio,
Fascinating presentation of this Black Vulture, sharp and with excellent light. I like how the light plays on the subtle colour differences in the plumage.

Hi Livio

Is this Darth Vader? :)) What a superb capture! I really like the POV here (although it's not one usually used) exactly because it has a great and new idea pointed out nicely by the title.
The details and lighting are great and the DOF is impecable.
Very well done!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Livio,
We have vulture here as well but they are Turkey Vulture. I think this one is a bit nicer :-) This is a very good capture of it in an unusual pose. You caught excellent details, this is an impressive picture. Their wings are really amazing and it is a beauty to see them fly too... Well done!
Claudine

Hi Livio,
An excellent pose you have captured on this Black Vulture. You have managed the bright sunlight very well. Color and detail in the plumage looks great. He kind of reminds me of the Star Wars movie villian Darth Vader with that black cape.
Scott

Hello Livio!

Very good picture. Pose is extraordinary. I don't know exactly why, but it remainds me some old retiring politician in coat of feather leaving scene. Great capture my friend!

Hi Livio,
what a pose, I like to see this bird from the backside, to see the feathers with a wonderful glance of the sunlight, very nice, thanks and greetings

Hi Livio,
What an interesting POV of this black vulture.
The post is well named, as it shows off the "cape" formed by his spread-out wings. A very unusual perspective.
Focus and exposure are excellent.

Hola Livio:
Extraña pose en esta magnifica toma, donde se destaca muy bien el plumaje del còndor. Parece un viejo prelado (y pelado, ademàs) con su negra capa. Has jugado muy bien con las luces y sombras, creando profundidad en el cuadfro.
Congratulaciones.
Nelly

Nice detail, tough to get good definition in the black plumage, you managed it superbly.

I like this shot a lot Livio; it's almost like the bird is wearing a cape. :) Good sharp details on the feathers. Nicely blurred bg and nice light. The eye seems a wee bit soft (but maybe it's my eyes). Maybe you needed a slightly longer dof?

Regards,
Pieter

Hello Livio,
I saw the Rabengeier (the german name from the Coragyps atratus) at the eagle station. - Very nice pose here. Very good POV, great sharpness, details and good lighting. This is a very good composition. Thank you for posting my friend. I wish you a Happy New Year.

Caro Livio, este é um magnífico exemplo de que urubus podem render belas imagens. Gosto muito destas belas aves rejeitadas pelo homem. Ainda não tenho fotos de urubu...mas depois desta logo terei. Parabéns!

Saw many vultures back home in Pennsylvania, but more turkey than black ons.

POV is excellent, you've captured an intimate moment from a perspective one doesn't normally get with these birds.

Good DOF, the vulture really stands out in sharp contrast and color to the background.

Funny pose.
perfect composition With good POV and DOF.
Crisp clear shot.
