Cracidae
Crax fasciolata pinima
Bahian Bare-faced Curassow
Bahia Maskerhokko (Dutch)
Endangered Subspecies A large pheasant-like inhabitant of the floor of open forest. The race pinima occurs only in NE Brazil, where much of the forest has been replaced by cattle ranches and plantations, the birds at present surviving only in small scattered subpopulations in Maranhão and Pará. Birds of all subspecies are eagerly hunted for food, but the nominate race fasciolata of C & SW Brazil, Paraguay and N Argentina and the race grayi of E Bolivia are still widespread and locally common. |
