[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This one was taken during a trek around Villarrica Volcano. It's a Monkey-Puzzle Tree, or Araucaria araucana. There are 3 species in the genus: one in Brazil, another in Chile, and a third in New Zealand, which says a lot abobut its origins, in evolutionary terms. This is usually used to show that Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and South America were once connected, and that Antarctica was actually covered in forests (in the days of the dinosaurs).
These trees are huge. I had never seen araucarias that big. They produce small cones that were once used as the sole source of winter food by local indigenous communities.
On a technical note, I couldn't figure out whether I liked this shot horizontal or vertical. I finally went for horizontal.
