[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This will be my last posting for a couple of weeks as I am going away - again! This time I am going to Papua New Guinea - mainly people (visiting the Sing-sing in Goroka) but hope to see some wildlife too.

I took this shot of Licancabur Volcano in 1999 - it is a scanned slide.

Licancabur is a highly symmetrical stratovolcano on the southernmost part of the border between Chile and Bolivia. It is located just southwest of Laguna Verde in Bolivia and northwest of Juriques volcano. The summit crater is about 400 m wide and contains a 70 by 90 m crater lake which is ice-covered most of the year. This is one of the highest lakes in the world, and despite air temperatures which can drop to -30 °C, it contains planktonic fauna.

Licancabur's most recent volcanic activity produced extensive lava flows which extend 6 km down the northwest and southwest flanks, with older lava flows reaching 15 km and pyroclastic flow deposits as far as 12 km from the peak. Extensive Inca ruins are located at the summit, providing proof of pre-Columbian ascents as well as evidence for a lack of major eruptions over the past 500–1,000 years.

Licancabur is a Cunza word that the indigenous people of this area used to refer to themselves as well as to the volcano.

The Andes mountain range is the highest mountain range outside Asia, with the highest peak, Aconcagua, rising to 6,962 m (22,841 ft) above sea level. The summit of Mount Chimborazo in the Ecuadorean Andes is the point on the Earth's surface most distant from its center, because of the equatorial bulge. The Andes cannot match the Himalayas in height but do so in width and are more than twice as long.

awesome colour and lighting! The shadowed FG contrasts amazingly against early morning/setting sun. An excellent POV.

an immense tonal change here from foreground to distant mistiness
despite the scanning process lots of detail and tonality have remained
it reminds me of a sinai trip i took
south america and the andes are fascinating subjects
