Phoenicopterus chilensis
The chilean flamingo is endemic to southern south america, and lives in salt flats in the Andes highlands or along the coast and Patagonia throughout CHile. In the central regions of Chile, they are very rare because they're quite shy and there is too much human presence.
It is stunning to see a big flock of them flying all at once.
An interesting fact: the ones that live in the salt flats have only one source of food: a crustacean that only lives in salt flats. They don't feed on anything else because nothing else can survive the salinity. The shells of the crustaceans have the pigments that give it the pink colour on its feathers.
It nests in solitary lakes and salt flats, searching for shallow spots on which to build a clay nest shaped like a headless cone. It lays only one egg.
The foxes that live in the Andean highlands sometimes sneak in and eat the egg, ruining the reproductive effort made by the flamingo that year.
