[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Rhyolite is a highly colourful volcanic rock - perhaps its most famous location is in the park to which it gives its name - Yellowstone - where it outcrops in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

Rhyolite is an igneous, volcanic (extrusive) rock, of felsic (silicon-rich) composition . The mineral assemblage is usually quartz, alkali feldspar and plagioclase (in a ratio > 1:2). Biotite and hornblende are common accessory minerals.

Rhyolite can be considered as the extrusive equivalent to the plutonic granite rock, and consequently, outcroppings of it often bear a resemblance to granite. Due to their high content of silica and low iron and magnesium contents, rhyolite melts are highly polymerized and form highly viscous lavas. They can also occur as breccias or in volcanic plugs and dykes. Rhyolites that cool too quickly to grow crystals form a natural glass or vitrophyre, also called obsidian. Slower cooling forms microscopic crystals in the lava and results in textures such as flow foliations, spherulitic, nodular, and lithophysal structures. Some rhyolite is highly vesicular pumice. Many eruptions of rhyolite are highly explosive and the deposits may consist of fallout tephra or of ignimbrites.

At the base of the mountain you can see the slanting salt deposits of the salt lake - about 4 miles from here there was open water and flocks of Andean and James' Flamingos.

A beautiful mountainscape with magnificent colors. This must have been an amazing sight. I keep looking at the shapes and the patterns which are wonderful. I love seeing the salt deposits at the base. You are doing a splendid job of showing us outstanding scenes of the world.

Hi James!

The colours of this perfectly shaped mountain are marvellous. I also appreciate the very interesting and instructive notes. I imagine this is a scanned slide or negative. It's not as sharp as we are used to and there's quite an amount of noise in the sky that could be partially removed in the postprocessing. But this doesn't change anything to the documentary value of the picture.

A truly splendid and impressive shot of this beautiful place.
Your note on this colorful rock - the rhyolite - is very interesting and educational as always and the pictures comes well with an example.
The layers here are really amazing and the tight composition in this mountain does well to focus one's attention on such elements. Gorgeous colors and superb shapes and patterns.

Talk about "purple mountains majesty"! You mentioned that some of my Colorado shots may have been of rhyolite but they were very red. I suppose there can be a range of color including yellow? at yellowstone. Thanks for sharing another interesting part of the earth's geology.
