Chilla fox sniffing a bit too close....

I unfortunately cut out the fox's nose and ears, but this shot has a funny story to go along with it. I took it in July of last year, but the story begins in february. I was in Tierra del Fuego doing research of beavers (an invasive species there) and we had to sleep in the field all the time. On clear nights we wouldn't put up a tent because the nights were beautiful. Well, one night a fox came and "marked" my sleeping bag with his urine. From that day on, every time I bivy, a fox comes by, smelling the other fox's urine and marks his own spot. I scare them away when I see them, but they usually come too late at night for me to notice. It's happened 3 times since the first mark. Well, this fox actually came during the day, and I caught him with the camera before he managed to mark me as his own.
As a note, I should suggest that taking some cloth with fox urine is a sure way to get other foxes to come near you.
As for the actual smell, I can say that my sleeping bag does not smell TOO bad. I still use it.
Cheers. |

Nice image, great story! I am familiar with the smell, so I can relate better than most. They are a curious critter though! Too bad about the crop, butyou managed to get the shot which counts!

Hola Pablo,
Great story - only problem to get pictures of foxes is to get this first mark :-)
I find the image a bit dark - tried a workshop...
