[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is an Green heron (Butorides virescens), the shot was taken near Santa Marta in the largest marshes located between the Magdalena river and The Sierra Nevada. This specimen was just fishing an "aguja" fish, and it was very uncomfortable to eat it, He tried several times to place the fish in position but that long nose remained out of the beak. At the end, he could do that.
An adult can measure no more than 45 cms, the beak is black and the legs are yellow, the color of the neck is redish.
They inhabit places with fresh water like rivers, around lakes or places where they can find salt water like mangroves. They generally stay alone inside the vegetation waiting for a little fish.
To said the truth, for me was very difficult to distinguish B. striatus from B. virescens.
