Galapagos Brown Pelican
Pelecanus occidentalis urinator
Endemic subspecies (found only in Galapagos, but other closely related members of the species found elsewhere)

Galápagos Islands have their own endemic subspecies of Brown Pelican; Pelecanus occidentalis urinator.

*An unmistakable, large brown bird with a heavy body and enormous bill. The adult has striking chestnust-brown and cream-coloured markings on the head when in breeding plumage. The juveniles are largely mid-brown, paler underneath. Brown pelicans are found around the coats and can often be seen soaring along cliff edges such as on South Plaza and Punta Suarez on Espanola.
Fish and small crustaceans are the brown pelican’s diet. They catch prey by what looks to be an entirely graceless (but actually very effective) plunge dive. They fill their pouch with a large amount of water and then filter out the small fish and crustaceans.

The brown pelican breeds in small colonies or individually in mangroves or small bushes, occasionally on rocks. 2 or 3 large eggs are incubated by both parents for about 30 days.

Hi Selen,
Excellent! He looks similar to the Brown Pelicans found in N. America, but there are some distinct differences. Nice soft light. Looks like it was a little overcast. The colors and detail in the plumage are perfect.

Being used to brown and white pelicans - this one looks a bit odd to me ( but maybe it's just the tense expression) or because he looks more ash colored. Either way it is a remarkable capture with fantastic detail and expression! Bravo! Cheers, Klaus

hello selen,

well done,
tfs & regards

Dear Selen.
I am really impressed with the details for which there appears to be not a lot of light. The colour turned out well as did the pose of this pelican.
Nice shooting.
Have a nice week in front of you.

Hello Selen,

Interesting picture of this Pelican observing something (what exactly?). I'm wondering if a vertical compo would work here... Also I think I would have cloned the little twig going over its beak (easy to do with PS...).

Nice shot and TFS!
