Lava fields and Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) trees in Isabela Island.

*Shaped like a sea horse Isabela Island is the largest island of the Galápagos with an area of 4,640 km˛, nearly 4 times larger than Santa Cruz the next largest of the islands. This island was named in honor of Queen Isabella of Spain who sponsored the voyage of Columbus.

Geology
One of the youngest islands, Isabela is located on the western edge of the archipelago near the Galapagos Hot Spot. At approximately 1 million years old, the island was formed by the merger of 6 shield volcanoes - Alcedo, Cerro Azul, Darwin, Ecuador, Sierra Negra and Wolf. All of these volcanoes except Ecuador are still active making it one of the most volcanically active places on earth. Two of the volcanoes Volcan Ecuador and Volcan Wolf (the islands highest point with an altitide of 5,600 feet or 1,707 meters) lie directly on the equator. The island is primarily noted for its geology providing excellent examples of geolgic occucance that created the Galapagos Islands including uplifts at Urvina Bay and the Bolivar Channel, Tuft cones at Tagus Cove, and Pulmace on Alcedo and Sierra Negra (Galápagos) one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

Isabela is also interesting for its flora and fauna. The young island does not follow the vegetation zones of the other islands. The relatively new lava fields and surrounding soils have not developed the sufficient nutrients required to support the varied life zones found on other islands. Another obvious difference occurs on Volcan Wolf and Cerro Azul, these volcanoes loft above the cloud cover and are arid on top.

*The most abundant and clearly identifiable tree of the Arid and Transitional Zones, Palo Santo trees form sparse forest over much of the lowlands of virtually all the islands. The height varies from island to island , reaching a maximum of 12 m. It is easily identified by its grey bark, which is actually a covering of lichen, the natural bark being of a purple-brown colour. The Palo santo is leafless for most of the year and comes into leaf only with the arrival of the annual rainy season (El Nino).

Wonderful perespective, nice composition. And 'running' clouds make the picture really beautiful

A unique landscape Selen, but I liked the cloud formations most. Would give my left arm (well, no, but maybe my old camera!) to be there!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Selen

This is an absolute beauty!
You high vista point from here enabled you get this superb view over this huge and beautiful place.
I really like all the little bits that contrast here: the wonderful clouds and the blue sky, the white bark of these amazing Palo Santo trees and the terrain and even their own leaves. There are excellent details here everywhere you look!
Also, the composition is very nice - with the slopes and nice stretched sky giving a nice sense of perspective.
Overall: a very beautiful landscape shot from you!

Bravo and TFS

Hello Selen

The low angle and POV in this shot are super. It really has an interesting optical effect.
The blue sky is beautiful and it almost looks like you could run up that hill and touch the clouds.
The colours are vibrant and well saturated.
Nicely done.
