English: Barred hawk
Latin: Leucopternis princeps

DESCRIPTION. 61cm; 1kg. Robust, broad-winged; short square tail. Adults: head, upperparts, and chest slate-black; rest of underparts and wing-linings white, barred finely and evenly with blackish (appears uniform gray from a distance); tail black with complete median white band, 1 or more incomplete narrow basal bands. Iris brown; cere and legs yellow. Young: similar , above with white scaling on wing-coverts. Contrast between black chest and pale belly diagnostic.
HABITS. Hunts mostly inside canopy or along edges of mountain forests, perching at medium heights to fairly low, making sudden stoops to ground or low vegetation for mostly slow-moving prey: snakes, frogs, large insects, crabs, occasionally mammals and birds; soars freely, often 2 or more circling high in air, calling loudly while engaging in aerial acrobatics.
VOICE. Clear, loud, far-carrying whistled notes, often melodious: keeer or kleeyurrr , sometimes repeated, accelerating into a high, clear laughing.
NEST. Unknown(?). Apparently located high in tree, in mass of epiphytes; in dry season.
STATUS. A fairly common resident of broken, humid-forested terrain at middle elevations; on Caribbean slope found the length of the country , from ca. 1300-6000 ft (400-1600m) in N and 3300-8200 ft (1000-2500 m) in S; occasionally wanders to adjacent lowlands, or up to 10,000ft (3000 m) or more; on Pacific slope found well beyond continental divide only along Cordillera de Talamanca, mostly above 5000 ft (1500 m).
RANGE. Costa Rica to NW Ecuador.
NOTE. Also called Barred or Prince Hawk.
This photo is taken in the "Refugio para aves rapaces" called: "Parque Cóndor" near Otavalo.
Sick and wounded birds are tended here. They let most of the birds (if it’s possible) free in the jungle as soon as they are recovered.

Excellent sharp image of the fantastic hawk that I'm sure has't been on TN before.
Even though its taken of a captive bird, its a great shot, superb sharpness.

An excellent shot on this Barred Hawk. The light was really bright for you here, but you managed the exposure very well. Beautiful color saturation and sharp detail in the plumage. He stand out well against that brilliant blue sky.
